Ride-on toys cover a lot of ground

Riding toys are available for kids of all ages and skill ranges. Non-powered riding toys typically suit the broadest age range and rely on kid power. Either way, these active toys get children moving, away from the TV or video games, and are great for encouraging active play and sparking the imagination.

Powered toys enhance outdoor fun by adding speed. Fisher-Price's Power Wheels line is suitable for younger children ages 1 through 6. Electric scooters, dune buggies and other high-powered toys are suitable for older kids (generally recommended for ages 8 and older) who have more dexterity and balance. Toddlers who are still learning balance and control typically enjoy classic riding toys such as foot-to-floor toys and rocking horses. We cover wagons, kids' scooters and kids' bikes (including tricycles) in separate reports.

When shopping for a ride-on toy, keep these tips in mind.

  • Match the toy to age and skill level. Every riding toy has an age range for which it's recommended. This is important because very young children don't have the balance, dexterity or understanding to operate some ride-on toys safely.
  • Consider available space. Not only do riding toys take up more storage space than smaller, stationary toys, but they often require more space to be able to move around freely. Some riding toys perform better on smooth surfaces, while others are more enjoyable on rough terrain.
  • Look for proven, time-tested toys. Kids get bored with toys rather quickly. Classics tend to stick around for years because they keep children entertained and interested.
  • Don't forget about safety. Most riding toys pose the risk of falling. Children should always wear a bicycle helmet while riding outdoors, especially on any toy that reaches significant speeds. Parents might also consider knee and elbow pads for added safety.
