Bikes & Gear
by Editors of BikeRadar.com
Our AssessmentSeveral British cycling magazines post their professional reviews on BikeRadar.com, including Cycling Plus and Pro Cycling. Over the past year, the site has considerably expanded its coverage and added a sorting feature that makes it easier to find the top-rated road bikes. The reviews themselves are excellent -- detailed, balanced and thorough. Each bike is rated on a five-point scale. The only downside is that some of the bikes aren't widely available in the United States.
Who's the 'Grand' Daddy?
by Editors of Cycling Plus
Our AssessmentCycling Plus evaluates four value-priced road bikes in this recent group test. Each bike receives a lengthy overview, and it's clear that testers know their stuff -- there's a great level of technical detail. Of the four bikes tested, the KHS Flite 500 and Moda Rubato tie with the highest rating of 9 out of 10. Editors say the KHS Flite 500 is a "stunning value for the money." Moda is a British brand that isn't widely available in the United States.
Mileage Business
by Editors of Cycling Plus
Our AssessmentCycling Plus tests six carbon sportive bikes in its latest issue (a sportive is a long-distance cycling event in which most competitors race against the clock rather than other riders). Multiple testers evaluate each bike on a 105-mile route. The test culminates in a lengthy review for each bike, along with an overall rating. The BH Prisma 7.8 Ultegra is declared the overall winner.
The High Mileage Club
by Editors of Triathlon Plus
Our AssessmentTriathlon Plus reviews four high-end road bikes in this excellent group test. The Scott CR1 Team, Specialized Roubaix Comp, Giant Defy Advanced 1 and Trek Madone 4.7 Compact get lengthy overall reviews. In the end, the Giant Defy Advanced 1 earns the Triathlon Plus Gold Award.
My First Road Bike
by Editors of Triathlon Plus
Our AssessmentTriathlon Plus features excellent group tests, including this one of four entry-level road bikes. Each bike is subjected to an intensive hands-on test that culminates in individual ratings for performance and value, in addition to an overall score. Unfortunately, the bike that earns the Gold Award -- the Scott Speedster S55 -- is a U.K. configuration that isn't available in the United States. Even so, this review includes a thorough evaluation of both the Giant Defy 2 and the Jamis Ventura Comp.
Three Great Road Bikes
by Nick Rearden
Our AssessmentCycling Active pits three entry-level road bikes against each other in this recent group test. Editors provide a lengthy evaluation of each bike and conclude with a percentage-based rating. A bottom-line verdict makes it easy to determine the best overall road bike. In this test, the Jamis Ventura Race is declared the winner.
2011 Editors' Choice Winners
by Andrew J. Bernstein
Our AssessmentBicycling reviews road bikes throughout the year. For its 2011 Editors' Choice awards, editors select the best bikes they tested in various categories, including entry-level, enthusiast and women's bikes. Each award-winner receives a brief review as well as several tester comments, but we'd love to see more analysis and critical feedback. Some of the recommended bikes cost more than $5,000, so they aren't included in this report.
Gear & Bike Review Finder
by Editors of Bicycling
Our AssessmentBicycling's Gear & Bike Review Finder is a great resource for evaluating road bikes. Bikes are divided into a variety of categories, and those that receive a recommendation in the latest 2011 buyer's guide are clearly listed. The reviews themselves are brief and the bikes aren't rated. Unlike some reviewers that are rated higher, Bicycling doesn't offer much criticism of the bikes it tests.
Road Bike Review
by Aaron Gulley
Our AssessmentOutside evaluates a variety of new road bikes for its annual cycling issue. After thousands of test miles, the magazine selects six of the best road bikes for 2011. The reviews are brief, but each bike is rated for responsiveness and handling. Unfortunately, Outside doesn't recommend any entry-level road bikes and all of the endorsed models are quite expensive -- three are well over $5,000.
Summer 2011 Buyer's Guide
by John Bradley
Our AssessmentFor its annual summer Buyer's Guide, Outside enlists the help of 18 testers to evaluate the latest crop of road bikes on a hilly route in Tucson, Arizona. The bikes are tested again in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Seven bikes are recommended including the Fondriest TF3, which earns the Gear of the Year award.
Three Great Road Bikes
by Nick Rearden
Our AssessmentU.K.-based Cycling Active tests three road bikes at a similar price point for this group test. After the hands-on evaluation, each bike receives a detailed review that's comparative and appropriately critical. Bikes are then rated on comfort, value, handling, wow factor and build quality. The review of the Jamis Ventura Race is especially helpful.
Spring Gear: Road Bikes
by Editors of Women's Adventure Magazine
Our AssessmentWomen's Adventure Magazine recommends five road bikes for women at a variety of price points. Although the magazine doesn't publish Editors' Choice awards like it did last year, each bike receives a brief review and it appears they've been personally evaluated.
Tech - Bike Tests
by Editors of Road Bike Action Magazine
Our AssessmentRoad Bike Action Magazine tests one or two road bikes per month, and the reviews are published on its website RoadBikeAction.com. The reviews are highly detailed, but the bikes aren't rated or compared. Among recently tested bikes, the KHS Flite 750 and Giant TCR Composite get high marks.

Training Wheels

All Gear Reviews
by Editors of 220 Triathlon
Our Assessment220 Triathlon is a British magazine geared toward triathletes, and editors evaluate road bikes on occasion. Reviews are incredibly detailed and balanced, and each road bike is rated on a 10-point scale. The only downside is that the reviews aren't dated, making it difficult to determine which model year is being evaluated.
Gear of the Year 2011
by Steve Casimiro
Our AssessmentNational Geographic Adventure gives its annual Gear of the Year award to the Giant Defy Advanced 3. The review itself is relatively brief, and there's no explanation of why this bike was chosen over all the others. However, the bike has been personally evaluated.
Road Bike Reviews
by Contributors to Buzzillions.com
Our AssessmentMultiple Trek road bikes receive a number of reviews on Buzzillions.com, a site that compiles user reviews from a variety of online retailers. Many of the Trek bike reviews come from the Trek website. Normally we're pretty skeptical of reviews listed on manufacturer sites, but it seems these reviews are mostly balanced.

by Editors of Road.cc
Our AssessmentThis British cycling website has incredibly detailed test-based reviews of road bikes, but many of the bikes reviewed aren't widely available in the United States. Each bike is rated on a five-point scale, making it easy to see how they stack up against one another.

by Jason Mitchell
Our AssessmentFeedTheHabit.com, an outdoor gear blog, reviews road bikes on occasion. Jason Mitchell writes detailed and balanced reviews, although the bikes aren't rated and are rarely compared to each other. Mitchell has recent reviews of road bikes from BH, Specialized, Felt and others. This site is also a good choice for reviews of cycling accessories and components.
Buy Your Perfect Bike
by Editors of Zest
Our AssessmentBritain's Zest magazine has a solid review of various types of bikes, but only two road bikes are reviewed -- and one isn't available in the U.S. Even so, the Fuji Women's Finest 2.0 earns a recommendation for those new to road riding.
Adult Bikes
by Contributors to Walmart.com
Our AssessmentThe GMC Denali Road Bike is the top-rated road bike on Walmart.com, where owners give it an average of 4 stars (out of 5) in more than 200 reviews. Overall, most owners are happy with it, although others complain about the long-term reliability and durability of such an inexpensive road bike. Most experts recommend shopping at a dedicated bike shop, where you're more likely to get a good fit and proper assembly.
