The Trek 1.2 is widely hailed as a great road bike for beginners. Thanks to comfortable, upright positioning and stable handling, reviewers say this bike performs well for its intended audience -- new riders. Like most road bikes in this price range, the Trek 1.2 has an aluminum frame and uses components from Shimano's lower-end Sora group, including shifters and derailleurs. It has a triple chainring, which reviewers say is a good choice for beginners, because it gives a wider range of gears and to help with hills. Testers say the Trek 1.2 provides a comfortable ride with good acceleration, but they also note that the brakes are somewhat weak. The most common complaint involves the bike's shifting; multiple reviewers mention that the shifter can hesitate on hills and isn't the smoothest. For women, Trek makes a women-specific model, the Trek 1.2 WSD, for the same price. Beginners seeking a racier road bike may want to take a look at the Felt F95 Team Issue (MSRP: $850). It's priced similarly to the Trek 1.2, but it offers a sportier ride and Team Garmin colors.

We found the best reviews of the Trek 1.2 at Bicycling magazine and the Los Angeles Times. Both publications test the road bike and present balanced reviews that note pros and cons. The Trek 1.2 also gets brief reviews in The Boston Globe and in Fitness magazine, but it appears that these sources haven't actually tested the bike. There are a number of owner-written reviews on sites like Buzzillions.com, but the reviews are somewhat dated. But if you are considering buying a used Trek 1.2, this can be a great resource because the reviews go back several years.

Our Sources

1. Bicycling.com

The editors of Bicycling magazine pick nine of the best road bikes under $1,000, including the Trek 1.2. Testers who also race bikes say the ride is a bit sluggish, but Bicycling says that is a good thing for beginners. The triple chainring also gets high marks for being beginner-friendly.

2. Los Angeles Times

Endurance cyclist Roy M. Wallack reviews four road bikes that combine comfort and performance, including the Trek 1.2. He praises the upright positioning, which provides "ride-all-day" comfort, and the triple chainring for easier hill climbing. The biggest downside, according to Wallack, is that the aluminum frame won't absorb as much road vibration as carbon-based bikes.

3. Fitness Magazine

Fitness magazine focuses on the best bikes for its female audience, choosing the Trek 1.2 WSD as the best road racer designed for women. They like the lightweight frame and extensive gearing options for climbing steep hills.

4. The Boston Globe

The Boston Globe's Ethan Gilsdorf interviews a local bike shop expert, who recommends the Trek 1.2 for those on a budget. He calls it a "no-frills" bike that "gets the job done."

5. Bicycling.com

In this older review, Bicycling reviews the 2008 model of the Trek 1.2. It's a good reference, but keep in mind that some of the components have changed on the 2009 model. The 2009 Trek 1.2 uses Shimano Sora shift and brake levers instead of Shimano 2203 levers on the 2008 model, and the crank is updated to a FSA Vero T.

6. Buzzillions.com

There are nearly 60 owner-written reviews of the Trek 1.2 on Buzzillions.com, but there are two caveats -- the reviews are primarily from the Trek website, and the majority are written in 2008. Overall, the Trek 1.2 gets a rating of 4.3 stars out of five.
