Reviewers say the following about shopping for salsa:
- If you can, make your own. Even the best jarred salsa can't compare to a quick dip concocted at home, experts say. Also, even the finest home-made salsa, using the most expensive ingredients, will be more economical than a 16-oz. jar of your favorite brand.
- Make sure to buy enough. If you're hosting a dozen guests for a Super Bowl party, and they'll be snacking all afternoon, you may want to stock up on four or five jars of salsa. If you're only serving chips and salsa as a quick appetizer, a single jar should do just fine.
- When in doubt, go with the basics. Unless you know your guests have cast-iron constitutions, don't serve "hot" salsa (some varieties of which can be very, very hot). And unadventurous eaters will be happier with a plain salsa -- even from a gourmet brand like Desert Pepper -- rather than an unfamiliar peach mango concoction.
