Canon CanoScan 9000F

Pros
  • High resolution (up to 9,600 dpi)
  • Fast
  • Versatile
  • Includes Photoshop Elements
Cons
  • Bulky
  • Canon's software could be better

Bottom line

The Canon CanoScan 9000F is a well-reviewed multipurpose scanner with a maximum resolution of 9,600 dpi. PCMag.com's M. David Stone says, "It does an extremely good job with photographic prints but is less impressive for film (slides and negatives)." Like other flatbed models in this price range, the 9000F uses an LED light source that almost eliminates warm-up times. In general, reviewers are complimentary of the scanner's ease of use and color quality. The software, which includes Adobe's Photoshop Elements (*Est. $70 when sold separately), is a good deal, they say. If you need to scan a lot of film, slides or negatives, though, this scanner isn't your best choice.

Scan quality

Good resolution and good color quality -- on prints. The resolution of the Canon CanoScan 9000F is better than many in its category, and reviewers say that it does an excellent job with prints and, to their surprise, slides. Negatives are a different story; for those, most reviews recommend color-correcting software. Reviewers rate the image quality from the scanner as excellent overall.

Ease of use

Install, plug and play. The Canon CanoScan 9000F comes with most of the software you'll need for any use, reviewers say, though they recommend third-party programs for color balancing. Install the software, which includes drivers, unlock the scan head and plug it in. Use the included software or buttons on the scanner to begin. The Canon CanoScan 9000F comes with two software programs for image editing, and PCMag.com recommends ArcsoftPhotoStudio for beginners and Adobe Photoshop Elements for more advanced users.

Durability

Durable scanner, delicate film holder. User reviews, typically the best source of durability information, are generally very positive for the Canon CanoScan 9000F. The one major durability complaint is about the plastic frames that hold negatives/film while scanning; these can be fragile, owners say, and cannot be replaced easily.

Warranty

Great hardware warranty and service, not so for software. Canon's one-year warranty on the CanoScan 9000F is longer than that offered by some other brands. Customers praised the company's support for hardware issues, but they complain that the company offers no support for the software that it ships with the scanner, including the Canon-produced drivers and operating software.

Review Credibility: Excellent Mike Pasini gives a detailed review of the Canon CanoScan 9000F scanner including comparisons to its closest competitors, the Canon CanoScan 8800F and the Epson V600. Pasini likes all three units but says the 9000F has a slight edge, with higher resolution than both competitors. He does note, however, that the included software limits its ability to produce the highest quality color images from slides, and he recommends using a third-party scanning utility like SilverFast or VueScan.

David Stone gives the Canon CanoScan 9000F a rating of 3.5 out of rating, writing that it is primarily sold as a photo scanner and that "it does an extremely good job with photographic prints but is less impressive for film (slides and negatives)." His insightful review compares the 9000F to its predecessor, Canon's 8800F, and to two close competitors from Epson, the V500 and V600.

Review Credibility: Good About.com guide Peter Piazza gives a short summary of his hands-on testing of the Canon CanoScan 9000F. He gives it a rating of 3.5 out of 5, saying that its overall image quality is very good. One criticism he has is that "optical character recognition was spotty at lower resolutions, but seemed to improve at higher resolution; however, the end product of OCR scans comes out in Notepad, which isn't the most useful program."
