Bottom line

If both portability and versatility are key, the Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini is the top pick among experts for a sheet-fed scanner that can be used on a desktop or taken on the road. PCMag.com selected the imageFORMULA P-150 as a Best of the Year 2010 winner, and it's also an Editors' Choice. According to M. David Stone, who reviews it for PCMag.com, the P-150 Scan-tini "may be the smallest scanner possible that offers both portability and the conveniences you'd expect in a desktop scanner." Reviewers like the software that comes bundled with the imageFORMULA P-150, and PCMag.com's Stone says that "it will be hard to find a better balance of speed, capability, and price." (A Mac version, the Canon imageFORMULA P-215, is also a very highly rated scanner.)

Scan quality

Scan images are terrific for a portable device. Reviewers say the Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini does a tremendous job of scanning images. The P-150's capabilities are limited: It can only scan sheet fed pages and has a maximum resolution of 600 dpi. But if you're trying to scan text or basic documents for character recognition, that's more than enough to create crisp scans, and the Scan-tini can do them on the go.

Ease of use

Easy to hook up and use, but a little heavy. The Canon P-150 scanner is easy to hook up, reviewers write, with common drivers that work across programs, a single cable that delivers both data and power and a well-designed package that folds up neatly when you're not using it. Users of the P-150 Scan-tini are split between liking the software it comes with a great deal and calling it crude. It's heavier than some other portable models.

Durability

A durable portable device. Users report using the Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini scanner for extended periods without incident, though most say they use it more lightly than they would a desktop scanner, especially one for documents. Only a couple users of the 70-plus reporting at Amazon.com mention hardware troubles or breakdowns, and there is no consistent trend.

Warranty

A good warranty and good service. The Canon P-150 scanner comes with a one-year limited warranty, which is standard among better-quality scanners. Users who need to contact customer service generally report positive experiences.

He tests it at different resolutions to measure the scan speed, and he reports that it matches the manufacturer's published specs. "With its duplex scanning capabilities, small size and plug and scan features," Galbraith concludes, "the Scan-tini is kind of a big deal."

4. Expert Reviews (U.K.)

Review Credibility: Very Good UK site ExpertReviews.co awards the Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini 4 out of 5 stars in this hands-on review, writing that pages feed smoothly, are scanned quickly for a portable device at the default 200 dpi resolution and the software is easy to use. Bumping the dpi up to 600 slows down the scans, but it results in excellent quality text and good color and shading. They recommend scanning at 300 dpi for text in general.
