Reviewers agree that the Epson Perfection V700 Photo scanner is a high-quality flatbed scanner that produces top-notch photo scans. The scanning process itself is, however, up for some debate; some reviewers complain of slow scan times, while others praise zippy scans; some testers report outstanding photo quality right out of the box, while others say the images require tweaking. In the end, though, every reviewer ends up with excellent scans. The scanner comes with an outstanding software bundle that includes Adobe Photoshop Elements. For more demanding users, the Epson Perfection V750-M (*Est. $760) offers improved optics, antireflective glass and more.
Top-quality print and good film scanning. As you would expect for a professional-level model, the Epson Perfection V700 scanner delivers excellent quality scans, reviews say, with 6,400 dpi and excellent reproduction. Some reviews note that the color balance shifts slightly to red, but they praise its handling of dust and scratches. It receives strong marks for negative and slide scanning, unusual among flatbed scanners.
Easy to use but software may require updates. In general, users find the Epson Perfection V700 scanner easy to set up and get started with, and they give the included software bundle high marks. However, some say the software included in the box is dated and needs to be upgraded the moment it's installed.
A durable machine. Most users report no issues with durability or breakdowns. As with all scanners that include thin holders for film, those parts tend to break first, if any do.
A good warranty and a few quibbles from users. The one-year limited warranty offered by the Epson Perfection V700 is standard among better-quality scanners, and most users don't report needing it. Among those who do, a few experienced frustrations with customer service.

Review Credibility: Very Good This review is a bit less thorough and not as well documented as most of M. David Stone's PCMag.com reviews. Overall, Stone reports, serious amateur photographers will love the Epson Perfection V700 for its top-quality photo and film scans, but it has "minimal optical character recognition (OCR) and document-management capability."

2. PC World
Review Credibility: Very Good The Epson V700 is a good choice if you need the best film scans, according to this short write-up for PC World. But, reviewer Richard Jantz suggests, the V700 is a bit much for more general scanning.

3. CNET
Review Credibility: Very Good Lori Grunin is the only reviewer to reconcile the discrepancies in speed performance, as reported by other critics, by measuring variations in the Epson V700's scan speed according to what tasks it is performing. Her CNET review also recommends the V700 for film digitization over dedicated film scanners like Nikon's Coolscan series.

4. ScanDig
Review Credibility: Very Good ScanDig is a German site primarily geared to reviewing film scanners. Editors review the Epson V700 to compare its film scanning performance to that of dedicated film scanners. ScanDig editors conclude that the Epson V700 produces sufficient quality for users "without professional requirements"; for pros, however, they say "this device is not the right one."

Review Credibility: Very Good Mike Pasini puts the Epson Perfection V700 scanner through its paces in this detailed, hands on review. He praises the photo scanner's speed, sharpness and image quality, saying "it also delivers one of the highest-quality captures we've seen in a flatbed."He adds that despite the usual reservations about scanning film with flatbeds, it can "undeniably handle the demands of film."

8. Macworld
Review Credibility: Fair James Galbraith's write-up of the Epson Perfection V700 scanner for Macworld is not long, but it is thorough. The scanner gets a high overall rating, but Galbraith reports that some scans skewed too red in tests. He also notes that while the Perfection V700 is "a fine choice for those looking for a midrange scanner for both photos and high-resolution transparencies," its 6400 dpi resolution is unnecessary and expensive, unless you plan to make large prints. A recent reorganization of the site appears to have lost the full text of this review, although the summary and rating remain.
