Protecting Against Online Threats
CHRISTINE FRIETCHEN, editor-in-chief
Internet-service and e-mail providers are getting better at spam filtering and anti-virus protection, but they're still not perfect, and they can't protect against phishing (e-mails and websites that try to fool you into turning over personal information) or spyware (which attempts to monitor your online behavior and possibly steal data). According to Gartner security analyst John Pescatore, "Spyware and phishing are actually bigger problems for consumers than viruses." Viruses can do more damage than spyware, but spyware is much more prevalent. Small spyware programs and add up to cripple your computer, and the worst spyware can aid identity thieves.
If your ISP or e-mail provider is already doing a good job keeping spam and virus e-mails out of your inbox, you may only need anti-spyware software and a firewall. The most comprehensive solution is an Internet security suite, but these can be huge programs that suck up a lot of your computer's memory and speed.
