Cuisinart SS-700 Reviews
Bottom Line

You can't do better than Keurig when it comes to pod coffee makers, and experts say this Cuisinart SS-700 Single Service Brewing System, which is made by Keurig for Cuisinart, is the best of the best. It gets raves for its "smooth" results, and it's reported as easy to use. It also gets kudos for both size and temperature consistency from cup to cup. The big complaint we saw was from owners who said that it broke down quite quickly.

Breaking it down

Performance

First time, every time consistency. The Cuisinart SS-700 excels in professional tests for its speed and consistency cup after cup after cup of coffee. The Good Housekeeping Research Institute notes that it takes less than a minute to brew a single cup, and that it "brews in the optimal time for producing good-tasting coffee." Another well-respected organization that tests kitchen appliances says being able to set the water temperature to between 169 and 175 degrees results in a smooth brew, with good extraction and dissolved solids. Owners agree, saying they love that they can program the strength of their coffee, and that they appreciate the five cup sizes and the hot water only button that allows them to prepare soups or hot cereals.

Ease of use

Intuitive controls. One of the key features that put the Cuisinart SS-700 on top with both experts and owners is how simple it is to use. One professional product review organization gives it an Excellent rating for convenience; another calls its controls "intuitive." It has an unusual, self-cleaning feature that users praise, and they also say it's easy to fill. It needs an occasional needle cleaning, -- all pod coffee makers do -- but that's also reported as simple to do. That cleaning usually only needs to be done once every three months or so, depending upon how heavily the coffee maker is used. The Cuisinart SS-700 is highly programmable and Good Housekeeping, along with plenty of owners say that it's very easy to program. It should be descaled every three months for best operation and durability. Descaling is a bit of a pain, but worth it, one expert source notes.

Appearance/durability

Big, but it also handles a crowd. The water reservoir on the Cuisinart SS-700 holds 80 ounces, enough for 10, 8-ounce cups of coffee. That means the water reservoir is big, as is the rest of the machine, so it will take up some real estate on your counter. It also weighs nearly 16 pounds, so you'll want to find a permanent home for it. However, users say it's very attractive, with a sleek, modern look in spite of its size. It comes in black and silver. The one consistent complaint we found about the SS-700 was regarding durability. Quite a few users complain that the pump failed too soon -- with some saying it quit working or started struggling as early as 6 months after purchase. Customer service gets mixed reviews, as many users say it's great as say it's terrible, so that's hard to gauge. It comes with a three-year warranty.
