Bottom Line

The Kid Basix Safe Sippy features an 11-ounce bottle made of food-grade stainless steel and a BPA-free lid with silicone parts to eliminate the risk of chemical leaching. The sippy valve of the Safe Sippy converts to the straw top of the Safe Sippy 2 . It includes an insulating sleeve and is described as durable enough to outlast your baby's childhood.

Ease Of Use

Not an entirely leakproof cup. The Kids Basix Safe Sippy system includes a hard-spout top that can be fitted with a sippy cup valve, which is the original Safe Sippy, a straw valve of the Safe Sippy 2 or a stopper valve. The sippy valve is designed not to leak. The straw valve is not sealed and will leak if the cup is turned upside down. The stopper valve effectively seals the cup during transit. However, parents say that it is inconvenient to replace the plug with the straw valve on the move and many complain about leaking with the straw valve. Some parents also report that the sippy valve can be knocked out of place, leaving the spout open, and there are reports that the cup occasionally leaks from the sides if the interior silicone seal isn't lined up well.

Parents say the Safe Sippy Cup is easy to hold with the rubberized sleeve and optional dual handles. Most say that the sippy valve is easy enough to draw from and that if their child can't master the sippy spout, the straw spout is a good alternative. The dishwasher-safe cup is reported as easy to clean, but the rubberized cover, silicone sealing ring and silicone valves can develop mold. The Safe Sippy 2 has nine parts including the three valves, travel cover, sealing ring, spout top, handles, bottle and grip. The Safe Sippy has six -- with no travel cover and only the sippy spout. All components of the cup are replaceable, but there are a lot of parts to keep track of.

Durability

A truly long-lasting, worry-free cup. The Kids Basix Safe Sippy can be used by babies as soon as they are capable of drinking from the sippy or straw lid. The bottle's stainless-steel construction is exceptionally durable and it will not break down over time. Teething babies will not be able to chew through and potentially choke on any parts of the Safe Sippy spout. The silicone stoppers, spout lid and sleeve can all be replaced if they degrade or accumulate mold over time. Multiple parents and reviewers say that the Safe Sippy is virtually indestructible, standing up to the trials of toddler time without significant injury.

Lifestyle Features

Convertible cup for multistage use. Parents and reviewers appreciate the Kid Basix Safe Sippy's versatility. Comprised of the same 11-ounce bottle and spout lid, the Safe Sippy can be used interchangeably as a sippy or straw cup. If you did not buy the Safe Sippy 2, you can upgrade your Safe Sippy with the Safe Sippy 2 Replacement Parts Pack (*MSRP $4.99).  Some parents say their babies do not take to the hard-spout lid with the sippy valve, but find that the straw valve works well when their children get a bit older.

The Safe Sippy sleeve and lid comes in a variety of fun colors that transition nicely from babyhood to toddlerhood, and they can be used interchangeably. According to most parents, the rubberized sleeve provides decent insulation for cold or warm drinks and a comfortable grip. The single-wall cup without the sleeve (the top of the bottle is not covered by the sleeve) will sweat, and may be too cold or warm for little hands. The optional handles help remediate this issue, and parents say that they add to the cup's flexibility for multi-stage use. They also say that the travel cap (included with the Safe Sippy 2 and Safe Sippy 2 Replacement Parts) is good for keeping germs out of the bottles but will not prevent leaks from the straw valve. According to multiple parents, Kid Basix's customer service is excellent -- they are quick to respond and send out replacement parts when issues arise with the bottle. The bottle is stainless steel and the spout lid is made of hard, BPA-free plastic.
