Good mat in the right circumstances, May 2, 2009

Unless you are significantly space and/or weight conscientious, consider a different Therm-a-Rest mattress. That being said, this mat will still provide a good night's sleep on reasonable terrain. There are cheaper Therm-a-Rest products that are more comfortable, but they are also more bulky. All Therm-a-Rest products are excellent, so your choice should be "which Therm-a-Rest," not "if Therm-a-Rest."

I Am Very Happy with it, But Not Everyone Will Be, April 19, 2009

I would not have bought this pad at it's normal price, but it was without a package, and the color has been changed by thermarest, so I got an excellent deal on it. The reason why I would not have bought it at its normal price, is because I had never tried one. I just assumed that it was an overpriced mat that no one needed. I was wrong. This sleeping mat is without a doubt the most comfortable one that I have ever used. It is high off the ground, and large enough to let me semi-sprawl out. I sleep much better now than I have ever slept on past trails. This pad rolls up small, but it is also heavy. It is a trade off between size or weight, and comfort. Because I do not have enough pack room to have a large, yet lightweight, sleeping pad, I have accepted the weight of this one. If you are a super lightweight hiker, this will likely be to heavy for you. If you can accept the extra weight, in order to obtain more room and much more comfort, than this is right for you. I highly recomend it.

Served the purpose well but not indestructable, January 10, 2009

This mattress is very light-weight, rolls up (with effort) into a very small space scarcely impinging on backpack volume at all, and is easy to inflate (the auto inflate stuff is a bunch of bull, but it's no job at all to inflate with your native bellows, just a few puffs is perfectly adequate). It feels just like the firm beds or futons I prefer in other situations. Alas, mine sprung a leak after about four years of sporadic use, so it auto-deflates after a couple of hours. The leak appears to be in the valve, so I haven't been able to repair it. Users are cautioned to store the thing deflated and hung up off the floor when not rolled up for backpacking purposes etc., which suggestion I have followed. Perhaps mine was in some way defective at the outset, as other users have not mentioned problems with leaks.

Therma-rest mat, October 17, 2008
My 15 year old son sectional hikes the AP with his dad and we got this for him for his birthday. He loves it! It made a big difference in his quality of sleep. It is easy to use and is worth spending the extra money to get the quality mat that will hold up. (And get the stuff sack too!)
Like sleeping on a real bed..., July 30, 2008
I recently went on a couple of camping trips.... One using this pad and another on an air mattress.. Let me tell you, this pad was actually a lot more comfortable than my air mattress... It was just like sleeping on a bed at home.. Item rolls up into a compact sack that fits perfectly in my day pack. I highly recommend this product to anyone that is going camping. Definately worth the price.
