Corningware 6-Quart Programmable

*Est. $40

Pros
  • Inexpensive
  • Comes with insulated carrying bag
Cons
  • Programming is minimal
  • Low setting is too low, some say

Owner reviews generally say the Corningware SC-60 (made by Select Brands and sometimes sold under that name) is a good value. It cooks food reasonably well, and it comes with an insulated carrying bag and other extras. The main drawback, when compared with more-expensive slow cookers, is that the programmable function is not very flexible. If you cook for fewer than six hours, it runs on high heat. If you cook for six to 10 hours, it runs on low heat. Some users say the low setting didn't cook the food thoroughly; experts say a good model should cook on high for an hour or two to kill bacteria, then switch to low. For about $20 more, you can opt for the Hamilton Beach Programmable 33966 (*est. $60), which reviews say is truly programmable.

We found no professional reviews of the Corningware SC-60, but user reviews at WalMart.com are helpful.

A handful of user reviews give the Corningware SC-60 a very high average score. Reviews are very brief and not very illuminating, and there is some contradiction over how well the programmable functions work.
