Great, November 3, 2009
Very nice crockpot. Love the retractable cord. My other slow cooker was about 10 years old and my have they improved! This one while a little pricey is very nice. The stainless steel container is alot bigger than I thought it would be, to me it is huge and takes up half a shelf in my closet. The timer is great though and the food came out perfect!
Misleading "Programable"", October 23, 2009

I was very excited to start using my Cuisinart slow cooker. I ordered it through Amazon and received it very promptly. However, once I unpacked it and started to read the directions I became dissappointed. To describe this unit as being programmable is misleading. The one feature I really needed was the ability to delay the start of cooking. But all the so called programming does is allow you to set how long it cooks.

liquid drips into metal casing, October 19, 2009
I gave this a 1 rating because it is poorly functional. When the liquid inside the pot boils, it spits and spills out from underneath the lid into the outer metal casing and burns. My pot was only half full at the time. Not a good slow cooker. I returned it.
Who checks the bogus pricing?, October 8, 2009

Amazon should be responsible for bogus pricing of their items. This is listed as a $78 item, discounted from $145. That's just a misrepresentation (another term for a lie). It's listed at the Cuisinart Web site at $79.95. At Bed Bath and Beyond, it's a whopping $79.99. Amazon is a good place to shop, but there are lots of pricing misrepresentations, particularly those that exaggerate the "discount".

Great slow cooker, August 26, 2009

After hanging on to my crock pot for 32 years, my mother suggested I upgrade to this one. It has features I never even dreamed of! Eg.I never realized you should never leave the house if you have one of the old-fashioned crock pots cooking. I always did... But with this one, you just set the timer and when the food's done, it goes into a "warm" mode eliminating the worry that it might go up in flames while you're out! I also really love that I can take the insert out to wash. Plus it's very spacious. I have yet to fill it up for just the two of us, but nice to know I can cook for a small crowd if needed. The retractable cord is terrific. The unit looks so good I just leave it out on the counter - which also encourages me to use it more often. Important safety feature if you have children: the insulation is more than adequate, keeping the entire unit a safe temperature. Even the insert can be handled without pot holders. Get this one - well worth the extra money!

1. Cook's Illustrated Magazine

The Cuisinart slow cooker is one of seven models compared in head-to-head testing at Cook's Illustrated, which evaluates cookers on their ability to cook chili, beans and other foods without scorching.

2. Slate.com

Pellettieri tests and rates eight slow cookers by preparing a wide variety of dishes. She also provides a brief history of slow-cooker technology. The Cuisinart PSC-400 isn't rated, but the 6.5-quart version wins the contest, with the only drawbacks being price and size.

3. Real Simple

Real Simple says it tested more than 12 slow cookers but identifies just the three winners, which is less helpful than it could have been. One of the winners is the previous version of the Cuisinart 6.5-quart model, the larger version of the PSC-400, which is praised for having a retractable cord.

4. About.com

Diana Rattray, About.com's guide to Southern food, rates 10 slow cookers based on her experience as a cooking expert. The Cuisinart PSC-400 isn't rated, but the 6.5-quart model makes the list. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)

5. Good Housekeeping

Good Housekeeping says it tested 13 slow cookers but identifies only the four category winners, including the previous version of the Cuisinart PSC-400, which is named the "compact champ." The brief review notes that it doesn't cook as much food as larger slow cookers, which is the whole point.

6. Woman's Day

While the staff-tested slow cookers in this article are not ranked, seven top picks are mentioned. Each slow cooker is given a label, and the PSC-400 is labeled "easier than ever" for its programmability, touch-pad controls and retractable cord.

7. Which? magazine

Which? is a U.K.-based publication similar to ConsumerReports.org. More than a dozen slow cookers are tested for safety and cooking performance and then subjected to a user trial for more than two weeks. The Best Buy Cuisinart 6.5-quart slow cooker is the earlier model of the larger version of the PSC-400.

8. Amazon.com

User reviews give the Cuisinart PSC-400 a very high average score. Most say it's worth the cost, and that cheaper slow cookers burned food, but some users complain the PSC-400 runs too hot.

9. Cooking.com

Owner-written reviews at Cooking.com are not as critical as those at Amazon.com, and most write-ups are brief. The Cuisinart PSC-400 gets a near-perfect score, but there are only a handful of reviews available. Customers loved the ease of use, features, and stylish and sturdy exterior.
