Space heater safety
The U.S. Department of Energy discusses different types of space heaters, how they work and points to keep in mind when choosing one.
The State of Massachusetts provides an excellent safety guide for electric space heaters, including fire statistics up to 2008.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is another good source for safety information.
It is also a good idea to check the CPSC's website periodically for recall information. Space heaters are recalled fairly often, although none of the models discussed in this report have been recalled recently.
ConsumerReports.org has a space heater buyer's guide that is available without a subscription.
HomeDepot.com has a detailed buyer's guide on portable heaters that discusses the various types of heaters available.
