The iconic Mercedes-Benz SL-Class roadster has undeniable prestige and class, reviewers say. In any of its versions, ranging from the "base" 382-horsepower SL550 up to the 510-horsepower V-12-powered Mercedes-Benz SL600 and two powerful AMG models, performance is commendable and competent. All engines are lauded for their smoothness and strong acceleration. Cornering produces very little body roll, and handling is secure. But the car is not as sporty and engaging as competitors like the Porsche 911 Cabriolet (*est. $83,800 to $136,500) or the Jaguar XK/XKR (*est. $74,835 to $92,035), reviewers say.
Compared with rival sports cars, some critics weren't pleased with the Mercedes-Benz SL's "artificial" steering feel, non-linear brakes and slow-to-respond seven-speed automatic transmission. The power retractable hardtop helps ensure a quiet cabin, whose luxurious interior is beautifully crafted and comfortable, most reviewers write. Critics note the dashboard is cluttered with complex controls, especially for the navigation system. Several reviewers are wary of the SL's below-average reliability record as well.
Because the Mercedes-Benz SL has been revamped for 2009, there are only a few reviews or comparison tests featuring the 2008 model. Car and Driver magazine features a dated but well-done comparison test of five upscale convertibles, including the 2007 Mercedes SL550, which is essentially identical to the 2008 model. Revealing general reviews are found at TheCarConnection.com, ConsumerGuide.com and Consumer Reports magazine, which also has useful reliability information.
