Compared with the previous-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK, the current model is much more performance-oriented and has more distinctive, aggressive styling, reviewers say. Three models are offered: the SLK280 with a 228-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6; the SLK350 with a 268-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6; and the top-performance Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG with a 355-horsepower V-8. All are two-seat roadsters with a highly praised power retractable hardtop that makes the cabin as quiet as a coupe when the top is raised. Another favorite feature is the optional "Airscarf," which provides warm air to the neck and shoulders via ducts in the headrests.
Some reviews say the Mercedes-Benz SLK provides quality and comfort similar to the prestigious and more-expensive Mercedes SL in a smaller package. While some say the SLK is a bit too comfort-oriented, like a grand-touring convertible, other reviews claim the Mercedes-Benz SLK is a perfect combination of ride comfort and sharp handling that can compete against most sports cars. The one rival that several reviews recommend over the SLK is the Porsche Boxster (*est. $45,800 to $59,900). Two road-test reviews found fault with the Mercedes-Benz SLK's automatic transmission, claiming it feels jerky or is slow to select the right gear. For model year 2009, Mercedes will introduce a slightly restyled SLK with new steering, some new features and more power from the 3.5-liter engine.
