Bottom line

With the ability to be folded in half, the Stamina SpaceMate can be easily stored. But at only $130, don't expect it to last much more than a year.

Performance

Varied opinions: Although the Stamina SpaceMate Folding Stepper is not the best in the world of stair steppers, it is good to keep its low price tag in mind (*Est $130). There are few professional reviews of this product; however, Amazon.com has no shortage of first-hand accounts. The 113 customer reviews range widely in their opinions of the workout received from this machine. "I would like the degree of difficulty to be a bit harder," says one, while another states, "The machine offers a very challenging workout and I say this as someone who is very active." Hydraulic cylinders control the resistance, providing a relatively smooth motion.

Ease of use

Folds in half so you can neatly store it anywhere: With the pull of a pin, this machine can be folded flat. It also comes equipped with wheels at the bottom to roll under a bed as StaminaProducts.com suggests. This makes for convenient storage and easy mobility, although it can still prove to be a bit bulky. One customer on Amazon.com states, "... don't count on folding this up and storing it under a bed ... it's still somewhat heavy and a bit bulky ..." The SpaceMate comes pre-assembled, so setting it up is not a hassle.

The attached computer counts your steps, keeps time and estimates how many calories you've burned. Oftentimes it has been known to cease operating. The luxury of this feature is not detrimental to a workout, but can prove useful to some while it lasts.

Durability

Does the job ... if only for a while: There are numerous instances where the SpaceMate has been known to break within six months. The pistons and computer have been reported to be unreliable by multiple reviewers. "This item's shocks will break before you say, 'I only used it sparingly,'" says one reviewer. The hydraulics, as noted on the machine, tend to get very hot with extended use. Possibly, some of the accounts of the machine breaking can be attributed to misuse of the product by neglecting to "warm-up" the machine as is sometimes suggested for manual stair climbers. Its steel frame may add a bit of weight to the product, but at least it is heavy-duty.

Customer service

Provides replacement parts, not a new machine: The SpaceMate Folding Stepper comes with a very short one-year warranty for the frame and 90-day coverage for parts. Unfortunately, most of the problems that occur with this stepper are parts related. If the machine does malfunction within the first three months, it's good to know that most customers have few complaints about the promptness of the company's reply. After the warranty expires owners can purchase spare parts from the company. The downside: If you don't have the skills or knowledge to perform the installation yourself, then those replacement parts are rendered useless.
