March 2009. The NordicTrack FreeMotion s5.6 (*est. $2,400) is a hybrid machine that combines the features of a stair stepper with an elliptical trainer. Unlike traditional stair steppers that have handlebars for balance only, the handlebars on the FreeMotion s5.6 move. NordicTrack claims that using both the foot pedals and handlebars will work your arms, legs and core muscles, and reviewers generally agree that the machine provides a tough workout. The FreeMotion s5.6 has 12 adjustable resistance settings and eight built-in programs. To keep track of your workout, it offers wireless heart-rate monitoring; for comfort there are built-in fans with three speeds and gel-cushioned foot pedals. The FreeMotion s5.6 is iFit compatible and includes a built-in stereo system. Complaints about the FreeMotion s5.6 are relatively minor; several consumers complain of excessive noise, but still praise the stepper overall. If you don't want to spend so much, consider a more standard stair stepper like the NordicTrack MTN 740 Stepper (*est. $650).

Fred Waters, a former fitness executive and the proprietor of Fitness-Equipment-Source.com, provides the most detailed review of the FreeMotion s5.6. He notes pros and cons, but does not compare this hybrid stair stepper. Several owner-written reviews on the NordicTrack.com website are helpful, but they are limited in quantity.

2. NordicTrack.com

There are only a handful of consumer reviews on the FreeMotion s5.6 available on NordicTrack.com, but they are detailed. We are normally skeptical of reviews posted on manufacturer websites, but these reviews are balanced and several reviewers note the drawbacks of this hybrid stair stepper.
