The 2010 Audi A4 Avant is widely praised as a beautiful car, with class-leading fuel economy and the best government crash ratings of any wagon. It has impressed experts so much in long-term tests that it now surpasses the 2010 BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon (Base MSRP: $35,700 to $37,700) as the most highly recommended luxury wagon. Except for an upgraded optional navigation system, the A4 Avant remains unchanged since its 2009 redesign; see our page on the 2009 Audi A4 Avant (*Est. $34,850) for a complete analysis of this car.
All-wheel drive comes standard on the A4 Avant, and it still manages better fuel economy than other luxury wagons: 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway/23 mpg combined. The 211-horsepower, 2-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic transmission carry forward unchanged from 2009.
The A4 Avant is the only station wagon to earn perfect government crash ratings, with 5 stars in all front, side and rollover-avoidance tests. In independent tests at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the A4 Avant likewise earns the highest rating of Good in front, side and rear crashes, but its rollover roof strength has not been tested. The A4 Avant includes the usual complement of standard safety features -- front, front-side and curtain airbags, antilock brakes, traction and stability control. Optional are rear side airbags, a blind-spot warning system and a collision warning system that senses impending crashes, alerts the driver and primes the brakes for full-force stopping.
The Audi A4 Avant is offered in one trim level for a base MSRP of $35,350, with Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige options packages available.
