  • Comfortable, classy interior
Cons
  • Pricey options

The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI delivers the best fuel economy in the station-wagon segment. Though its mileage numbers are the same as the diesel version of its cousin, the 2011 Audi A3 (Base MSRP: $27,270 to $30,850), the VW costs significantly less while still offering good looks, performance and handling. The 2011 Jetta SportWagen TDI is a carryover model -- there are no significant differences relative to last year. While not much is new for 2011, critics continue to heap praise on the Jetta SportWagen. Not only does the TDI deliver dazzling fuel-economy ratings -- 29 mpg city/39 mpg highway and 33 mpg combined with an automatic transmission or 30 mpg city/42 mpg highway/34 mpg overall with a six-speed manual --  its roomy cargo bay makes it as practical as it is efficient. Testers also praise the VW's driving dynamics and upscale looks, both inside and out, saying it performs like a sport sedan.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety names the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen a Top Safety Pick for 2011. The VW scores a Good (the highest rating) in front, side, rear and rollover roof-strength tests. Complete official government crash tests weren't available when we checked, but the Jetta SportWagen earns a 4-star rating for rollover resistance. Front, front-side and curtain airbags, antilock brakes, traction and stability control are standard; rear side airbags are optional.
