Wagons
by Editors of ConsumerReports.org
Our AssessmentConsumerReports.org tests most new cars, including station wagons. Cars with the highest ratings are endorsed by editors. ConsumerReports.org buys cars from dealerships anonymously, performs its own road tests and does not advertise for any car companies. Because ConsumerReports.org is a subscription site, we can't disclose their picks. Editors rate wagons and hatchbacks together in this category, but you'll find the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT wagons in the SUV category. Some cars with a wagon variant, including the Audi A4, Audi A6, Cadillac CTS and Saab 9-3, are tested only as sedans.

by Editors of Edmunds.com
Our AssessmentEdmunds.com reviews pretty much every car on the market, based on hands-on road tests. Editors recommend two wagons in each of four price categories, from less than $20,000 to more than $40,000 based on results of those tests. The roster features mostly returning champs, but for 2011 the BMW 5 Series is gone; the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes Benz E-Class are new winners.

Comparison: 2010 Kia Soul vs. 2009 Nissan Cube vs. 2009 Scion xB
by Edward Loh
Our AssessmentThis interesting head-to-head comparison test was performed in 2009 using 2010 models. Motor Trend had college students test drive these three boxy wagons. Unanimously, they liked the Kia Soul the best, mostly due to its styling. But Motor Trend experts prefer the Scion xB, which they found the best performer with proven quality.
Finding the Best Station Wagon
by Jonathan Welsh
Our AssessmentThe Wall Street Journal tests five station wagons to find the best. Each wagon gets numeric scores for ride/comfort, performance, fuel economy, exterior, interior and value, plus a brief write-up. The Volvo XC70 rates worst because it "just isn't much fun to drive." The diesel Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen gets the best fuel economy, the Subaru Outback offers the best value and the Audi A4 Avant is small but with "jewel-like" beauty. However, the overall winner is the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon, which impresses reviewer Jonathan Welsh with its horsepower, handling and attention to detail. The Wall Street Journal also reviews a few other wagons in its Autos section, including the Nissan Cube and both regular and EcoBoost versions of the Ford Flex.
Review: 2011 Volkswagen Jetta
by Edward Niedermeyer
Our AssessmentNiedermeyer sums up the difference between the Volkswagen Jetta Sedan and the Jetta SportWagen: "In other words, all of Volkswagen's premium-enthusiast Euro-appeal has been stripped from the Jetta, and been concentrated into the higher-quality, better-driving, more-expensive Sportwagon that true Euro-enthusiasts would have ordered anyway."
Comparison: 2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon vs. BMW 328i Sports Wagon
by John Beltz Snyder
Our AssessmentReviewer John Beltz Snyder drives the BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon and Acura TSX Sport Wagon back-to-back in a quest to determine the better car. He tests the vehicles during a snowy Michigan winter, and evaluates everything from each car's mechanicals to the sound the exhausts make to driving dynamics. The front wheel-drive Acura fares better on slippery roads than the rear-drive BMW, but Snyder says both are "a hoot" to drive. In the end, he decides the BMW is the better car, but only by a small margin.

Some 2011 wagons get close scrutiny -- including the Acura TSX Sport Wagon, the CTS-V Sport Wagon and an earlier model Audi A3 -- but editors don't pick any favorites. Other reviews and road tests for previous model year wagons are available in Autoblog's archives.
