Where to Buy

The T-fal Ultraglide FV4379 has features comparable to more expensive models, including variable steam controls. Experts say it doesn't output as much steam as the more expensive Rowenta Focus DZ5080 (*Est. $90) , but it weighs about the same and has nearly as large of a water tank. The Ultraglide's nonstick soleplate doesn't glide as effortlessly as stainless steel or ceramic, testers say, but this material is easier to clean if you iron with a lot of starch. The cord's telescopic design helps keep it out of the way, and owners say the iron heats up fast.

While the Ultraglide gets good reviews from owners, we found slightly better ratings for the Black & Decker Digital Advantage D2030 (Est. $45) , which is the subject of more than 1,000 user reviews at Amazon.com.

We saw the best evaluation of the T-fal Ultraglide FV4379 at ConsumerReports.org, where it's reviewed with 25 other steam irons. We also found a good number of owner-written comments at Amazon.com and a small number at Buzzillions.com. Users are generally very pleased with the iron, but there are a few reports of improper heating and leaks. The editors at Real Simple give the Ultraglide a nod as best "topple-resistant" iron; they say it's powerful, light and effective, and sturdy for its size thanks to its wide base that keeps it steady while vertical.
