The best cordless weed whackers give you all the benefits of an electric tool -- push-button start, no emissions, no engine maintenance and (relatively) quiet operation -- with the freedom of a gas string trimmer. A few decades ago, hardly any cordless models had enough power and battery life to be of much use, but today's battery-powered string trimmers are more durable – though they still can't compete with gas-powered models.
Experts say cordless string trimmers are best for trimming and edging small lawns. Battery runtime ranges from 15 to 60 minutes depending on the model, although reviews indicate that batteries often don't last as long as the manufacturer claims. Don't try to tackle large acreage or overgrown yards with these; few are able to handle more than medium-duty work.
Black & Decker is one of the most popular manufacturers of cordless string trimmers, and its models get consistently high ratings at Amazon.com, HomeDepot.com and Lowes.com. Both experts and owners say first-class cordless performance makes Black & Decker's LST136 (Est. $150) the best choice. User-friendly features such as automatic line feed, an adjustable handle and a feather-light body also make this trimmer a good value.
The LST136's Power Command system is a reviewer favorite; its six settings let them balance battery life and power to suit their trimming needs. Owners say the 36-volt battery lasts about 30 minutes (although one expert test rates it at only 15 minutes), and an on-board battery indicator shows how much energy remains. The LST136 is durable and well built, users say, and comes with Black & Decker's three-year warranty.
For an electric lawn trimmer with more muscle, reviews sayCore's CGT400 (*Est. $260) is a top contender. Capable of powering through tall grass and weeds with heavy-duty dual lines, its motor is still exceptionally quiet. It does cost more, but Joe Delulio at StringTrimmersDirect.com says the CGT400 is "a great value when you compare it to many of the commercial-grade gas-powered trimmers that it performs similar to."
The Core's power cell with Lithium-ion technology outlasts many other electric string trimmers, running for up to 60 minutes. Users have the option of two speed settings to choose extra power or longer runtime. The CGT400's long shaft and heavier body aren't comfortable for every owner, but most say it's easy to handle and operate.
