The Black & Decker NST2118 is an updated version of the discontinued and extensively reviewed Black & Decker Grass Hog NST2018, the top-rated cordless string trimmer in our 2011 report. Although it receives fewer reviews than its predecessor, the NST2118 gets good marks from users for its low weight and overall ease of use. It's about a half-pound lighter than the outgoing model, and its motor spins 200 rpm faster.
Owners appreciate features such as the automatic line feed (which they say works well), the adjustable handle for users of different heights and the extra battery that's included in the package. However, some owners warn that this second battery is really a requirement, and not just a nice-to-have spare because the trimmer's battery life is so short. Estimates of battery life range from 10 to 30 minutes of trimming time, and once it's depleted, the battery takes about 9 hours to recharge. Experts give the Black & Decker NST2118 good marks for trimming well-kept lawns, but its edging performance is only so-so and it can't stand up to heavy weeds. Users who need more power -- and who can accomplish all their trimming jobs within200 feet of an electrical outlet -- may be better off with the corded electric Stihl FSE 60 (*Est. $120).
The Black & Decker NST2118 cordless string trimmer is included in tests of string trimmers at ConsumerReports.org, where editors rate and rank it in comparison with 59 other models, including 15 other cordless trimmers. It also receives a total of about 250 reviews from users at Amazon.com, Lowes.com and the Black & Decker website.
