Bugaboo Cameleon

This full-featured, luxury stroller will carry your child from infancy to toddlerhood in style but little else

Pros
  • Adjustable suspension
  • Height-adjustable handlebar
  • Full recline and bassinet feature
  • Several color selections
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Difficult to fold
  • Doesn't handle uneven surfaces well
  • Storage hard to access

The Bugaboo Cameleon is a full-featured luxury stroller that consistently wins high praise from experts and owners for safety and durability. It also gets high marks for maneuverability, comfort and appearance, with a wide range of color and fabric choices. Owners particularly like its bassinet feature, large hood and adjustable suspension. However, as one of the most expensive strollers on the market, experts -- and some satisfied owners -- question whether it's worth its high price tag. The Cameleon bills itself as an all-terrain stroller, but one common complaint from parents and reviewers alike is that it doesn't perform well on challenging or uneven surfaces. The other major complaint is the stroller's tricky folding mechanism. Overall, the Cameleon's biggest fans seem to be those who don't need to fold it very frequently: parents who live in the city and walk virtually everywhere. The Cameleon may be a satisfying pick for those with deep pockets, but the more budget-minded who want an all-terrain stroller may want to look at the top-rated, but more moderately priced, BOB Revolution (*Est. $390).

StrollersAndPrams.com extensively reviews the Cameleon, complete with dozens of helpful photos. BabyGaga.com conducts a similarly rigorous review, grading the Cameleon in 11 performance areas and comparing it to other full-featured strollers. "Baby Bargains," a book that gives respected expert buying advice, also discusses the Cameleon, but notes it's tough to review simply because it's so expensive that few people own one, which may explain the relatively low number of reviews at generally reliable consumer feedback sites such as Amazon.com. The best and most numerous consumer reviews of the Bugaboo Cameleon come from owner-written forums at JoggingStroller.com, LilaGuide.com and MumsNet.com, a U.K.-based site. New York magazine also reviews the Cameleon, testing it as part of a review of eight strollers on the streets of New York City.

3. Baby Bargains

This book includes buyer's guides and ratings on a variety of baby gear. The authors say they conduct hands-on testing, as well as parent, manufacturer and retailer interviews. The authors give the Bugaboo Cameleon a grade of A because of its overall quality and sturdiness. Because of its complex folding procedure, they recommend it primarily for parents who live in urban settings and don't have to continually assemble/reassemble the stroller to move it in and out of a car trunk.

4. New York Magazine

Mom Faye Penn and her baby Ezra test eight trendy strollers -- and an inexpensive Fisher-Price look-alike -- on New York's cobblestones, buses, stairways and subways. Penn likes the Cameleon's super smooth ride, but notes it's awkward on stairs and difficult to maneuver on and off public transportation.
