Self-Tanners
by Paula Begoun
Our AssessmentThis subscription-based website is an excellent resource for research on nearly every type of cosmetic product, not just sunless tanners. Author Paula Begoun includes medical journals, industry reports and the Food and Drug Administration among her research sources, providing thorough information on each cosmetic's ingredients and potential problems. She points out that most sunless tanners are made with the same active ingredients and that streaking problems are usually due to application techniques rather than the formula itself.

Mystic Tan Review
by Jen Adkins
Our AssessmentJen Adkins, skin care guide for About.com, gives Mystic Tan a poor rating because it required her to stand in a small space, aggravating her claustrophobia. She also says the resulting tan didn't look natural, especially on her face. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)

It also lists top picks, most popular products and best buys according to their separate categories. Bronzers and Self Tanners
by Contributors to Drugstore.com
Our AssessmentDrugstore.com allows readers to post product reviews, including reviews for self-tanning products. Products in each category can be sorted according to the average user rating (a scale of 1 to 5). Most of the 5-star products receive only a few reviews, but some items such as Banana Boat, L'Oreal and Coppertone are highly rated by several dozen reviewers. This website is a good resource for gauging a self tanner's odor, performance and ease of use.
Bronzers & Self-Tanners
by Contributors to Sephora.com
Our AssessmentSephora.com sells several department store brands of skin care and beauty products. Consumers are able to leave ratings and reviews for all products listed at the site, but the ratings are a tad difficult to sort through. Most of the 47 sunless tanners and bronzers listed for sale are rated at least a couple of times and most receive favorable reviews. A couple garner upward of 400 reviews and receive high ratings. Among those with a high quantity of reviews, self tanners from St. Tropez, Clarins and Sephora Collection earn the highest ratings.

Sunless Tanning
by Editors of CosmeticsDatabase.com
Our AssessmentCosmeticsDatabase.com, a division of the Environmental Working Group, rates more than 200 sunless tanning products based on the safety of their ingredients. Products are downgraded for containing controversial ingredients such as phthalates and parabens. Editors do not, however, consider the effectiveness of sunless tanners, and products are not tested. Of the 200-plus products listed, only10 are given a low hazard rating and only two of those are actual sunless tanners. The rest are bronzers.
Daily Beauty Reporter Blog – A New Way to Tan: Color Theory?
by Kayleigh Donahue
Our AssessmentEditors of Allure magazine discuss an emerging trend in sunless tanners, namely color theory. Two new formulas – Duwop Clear Revolution and Sunlove Bronzini – use blue and green hues to counteract the orange hue left behind by self tanners. Cosmetic chemist Jim Hammer says the effect is temporary, however, and washes away with the first shower. Erythrulose, a chemical found in many gradual tanners, is a better option because it helps to develop a more natural-looking tan that lasts until the tan fades away.
