Author Paula Begoun includes medical journals, industry reports and the Food and Drug Administration among her research sources, providing thorough information on each cosmetic's ingredients and potential problems. She points out that most sunless tanners are made with the same active ingredients and that streaking problems are usually due to application techniques rather than the formula itself.

Among those with a high quantity of reviews, self tanners from St. Tropez, Clarins and Sephora Collection earn the highest ratings.

Our AssessmentIn this YouTube video, two women document their experience with Mystic Tan and Versa Spa. Each used a different tanning booth and recorded the instructions as well as before and after shots. Both spray tan booths work in a similar manner -- tanning solution is automatically and evenly sprayed over the entire body in an enclosed booth. The method and instructions vary only slightly and both women are satisfied with their results. Note: Both Mystic Tan and Versa Spa are owned by the same company -- Sunless Inc.

Our AssessmentCosmeticsDatabase.com, a division of the Environmental Working Group, rates more than 200 sunless-tanning products based on the safety of their ingredients. Products are downgraded for containing controversial ingredients such as phthalates and parabens. Editors do not, however, consider the effectiveness of sunless tanners, and products are not tested. Of the 200-plus products listed, only 12 are given a low hazard rating and only five of those are actual sunless tanners. The rest are bronzers.
