Products are downgraded for containing controversial ingredients such as phthalates and parabens. Editors do not, however, consider the effectiveness of sunless tanners, and products are not tested. Of the 200-plus products listed, only10 are given a low hazard rating and only two of those are actual sunless tanners. The rest are bronzers.

Our AssessmentEditors of Allure magazine discuss an emerging trend in sunless tanners, namely color theory. Two new formulas – Duwop Clear Revolution and Sunlove Bronzini – use blue and green hues to counteract the orange hue left behind by self tanners. Cosmetic chemist Jim Hammer says the effect is temporary, however, and washes away with the first shower. Erythrulose, a chemical found in many gradual tanners, is a better option because it helps to develop a more natural-looking tan that lasts until the tan fades away.
