Where to Buy

For those with babies and those with sensitive skin or who prefer fragrance-free sunscreen, reviewers say Blue Lizard Sunscreen Sensitive SPF 30+ is an excellent choice. Instead of chemical sunscreen ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin, Blue Lizard Sunscreen Sensitive SPF 30+ (and the identical Blue Lizard Baby) contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which act as a physical barrier against broad-spectrum UVA and UVB rays.

Blue Lizard sunscreen also is water-resistant. Because this sunscreen is thicker and creamier than others, it can take time to apply, and as with all zinc/titanium sunscreens, it can leave a whitish film on the skin. Reviewers note that the bottle or tube cap changes color in ultraviolet light to indicate that sunscreen is necessary.

Keep in mind that Blue Lizard also sells a baby sunscreen, Blue Lizard Baby Sunscreen, which is identical to the Sensitive formula. The only differences are the label and the color of the bottle cap -- because of this, we've opted to include this more general version in our Best Reviewed as the best baby sunscreen.

Beautypedia.com, beauty expert Paula Begoun's online database of product reviews, provides the most credible review of Blue Lizard Sunscreen Sensitive SPF 30+. She rates and compares several sunscreens, based on the effectiveness of their ingredients. Consumer reviews posted at MakeupAlley.com and Drugstore.com also provide useful feedback on the pros and cons of this formula.

Our Sources

1. Beautypedia.com

Paula Begoun calls Blue Lizard sunscreen a "very good pure mineral sunscreen," but she says that the chemical-free claim is "without merit" because all of the ingredients it contains are chemicals. Still, Begoun recommends the sunscreen to anyone with sensitive skin, including babies and children.

This website, run by consumer watchdog Environmental Working Group, rates sunscreens and other skin-care products according to the safety of their ingredients and sun protection. Blue Lizard Sensitive is one of the few recommended brands.

3. MakeupAlley.com

Consumers at MakeupAlley.com say that Blue Lizard Suncream Sensitive SPF 30+ is thick and heavy, but it works. Most complain that it leaves a white cast to the skin, and several prefer not to use it on their faces. Although a few users say that Blue Lizard sunscreen irritates their skin, most say that it doesn't.

4. Drugstore.com

Reviewers at Drugstore.com recommend Blue Lizard Suncream SPF 30+ because it is gentle on sensitive skin and provides effective broad-spectrum protection. A few, however, say it is a bit greasy and can be hard to rub in completely.

5. Bestcovery.com

Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen is recommended for all skin types, including those with sensitive skin. It is praised for its gentle ingredients, but it can be a bit heavy. There is no discussion of how sunscreens were tested, if at all.
