Most publications devoted to off-roading focus on tires built to withstand very harsh conditions, rather than to all-season tires. We found the best comparison tests of all-season tires at Consumer Reports, where the Dunlap Radial Rover A/T is ranked in comparison with 19 other all-season tires. Over 600 owners rate the Rover A/T at the retail site TireRack.com, and the official ratings published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are also helpful.
Reviews recommend the Dunlop Rover A/T as a budget all-season tire for trucks and SUVs, finding it a good value with a 60,000-mile limited treadwear warranty. The Rover A/T gets good ratings for quiet and comfort, and it grips well even in snow -- but it isn't a true all-terrain tire. The main drawbacks are poor traction on ice and only fair rolling resistance, which means some tires get better gas mileage. For a budget tire for driving on ice, in heavy snow or on rough terrain, reviews suggest the Pirelli Scorpion ATR (*est. $100).
