- Durable
- Good traction on dirt and gravel
- More expensive than better-rated tires
- Mixed reviews on mud and rocks
- No treadwear warranty
- Noisy
February 2009. This older tire model no longer takes first place in most reviews, but people who own the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R say it's still great for trail use. On-road, the Wrangler MT/R is noisy but handles decently, according to reviews. Off-road, most critics say the Wrangler MT/R is a rugged tire. However, it gets mixed reviews for two terrain types that trouble most tires: Sticky mud and big, sharp rocks. Some experts and owners say the Wrangler MT/R handles those conditions well, while other owners say the tires lose traction in mud and puncture easily on rocks. There is no treadwear warranty. We found more consistently good reviews for the all-terrain Pirelli Scorpion ATR (*est. $125), which carries a 50,000-mile treadlife warranty. If you want to go mud bogging or rock crawling, reviews suggest the Firestone Destination M/T (*est. $130) is a solid choice.
Professional reviews of the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R at Off-Road.com and 4x4wire.com are several years old, but still pertinent. This older tire isn't included in recent expert tests, but owner reviews at Tire Rack, Offroaders.com and Epinions.com offer feedback about the Wrangler MT/R's real-life performance.

This 4x4wire.com review, published when the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R first hit the market back in 1999, is still one of the most comprehensive we've found for this tire. Reviewer David Gray drives on the tires for five months, but his review mostly focuses on their performance during a Goodyear-sponsored trail run. Gray reports that he tears up his Jeep climbing rocks, but despite his attempts, he can't damage the tires.
