Reviewers say the Cambridge SoundWorks CD 745i is the best high-quality radio/CD player; most give it the edge over competing Bose table radios. The Wall Street Journal awards the previous version of this table radio (the 745i adds an iPod dock, but is otherwise the same) its highest rating among five table radios tested, saying the Cambridge Soundworks subwoofer creates the most satisfying low-register sound. This table radio plays CDs and MP3s, has a remote control and costs $150 less than the Bose Wave Music System (*Est. $500) and Boston Acoustics MicroSystem CD (*Est. $500), which have similar features. The 745i also includes a digital clock with dual alarms. If $350 is a bit out of your price range, a well-reviewed budget table radio is the iLuv 199 (*Est. $140).
We found the best review of the Cambridge Soundworks CD 745i table radio at The Wall Street Journal, which compares five different table radios. This Cambridge SoundWorks table radio is also glowingly reviewed by CNET, Home Theater Magazine, and Wired.

Falcone gives a high rating to the Cambridge Soundworks table radio, saying it's "easier to recommend than its discless step-down model." However, it's expensive, especially considering its lack of HD radio or satellite radio compatibility.

In this detailed review for the Cambridge SoundWorks Radio CD 745i, Mark Fleischmann tests it with jazz, classical and rock music. Fleischmann says that a quality component system might outrun the Cambridge, but that few other table radios could. Radio reception is also excellent, though sometimes he found the bass a bit boomy.

In this quick roundup, the Cambridge SoundWorks 740 (now replaced by the 745i) is recommended as a "Splurge" purchase, while the 2003 Bose Wave Radio/CD (since replaced by the Bose Wave Music System) is called "Overrated."
