Bosch 4100DG-09

Best portable table saw

Pros
  • Precision
  • Riving knife, excellent blade guard
  • Quiet soft-start motor
  • Gravity-Rise stand
Cons
  • Price
  • Blade-lock lever
  • Warranty only one year
  • Can't match SawStop for safety

Reviews give Bosch the lead among portable table saws, and say the newer Bosch 4100 saws are the best ever, with a blade guard system plus a true riving knife to prevent kickback. The most full-featured table saw in the line, the Bosch 4100DG-09, adds a digital rip fence for extra precision. Reviews praise the Bosch 4100 table saws for accuracy, convenient scales, easy blade changes, onboard storage and dust control. The soft-start 15-amp motor has electronic torque control to regulate the output to match the workload. Owners love the wheeled Gravity-Rise stand that snaps open or folds flat in a single, lever-activated motion. The only safety feature missing on this portable saw is the flesh-sensing blade brake found on the more expensive SawStop Contractor Saw (*Est. $1,600).

We found excellent comparison tests of the Bosch 4100 series in publications aimed at serious woodworkers and professional carpenters. The basic Bosch 4100 benchtop saw (without the stand or digital fence) is compared with four other saws at Popular Woodworking, while the top-of-the-line Bosch 4100DG-09 is compared with even more models at Tools of the Trade. Fine Woodworking compares the Bosch 4100-09 (with stand but without the digital fence) with five other portable saws. Fine Woodworking contributor Gary Katz provides a detailed review of the Bosch 4100DG-09, including photos that show how the new blade guard system works. Tom Hintz also provides a well-illustrated review, but his reviews are usually uncritical. Owners rate and review all three Bosch table saws at Amazon.com, while earlier reviews at ConsumerReports.org and Fine Homebuilding cover the Bosch 4000-09, which lacks the improved blade guard.

Our Sources

1. Popular Woodworking

The Bosch 4100 earns top ranking in a comparison against four other benchtop table saws (also equipped with riving knives) based on tests of accuracy and power, plus evaluations of ease of use. The Bosch is by far the quietest (though 93 decibels still requires hearing protection) and has an arbor lock to make blade changing easy. Dust collection is good, accuracy excellent without adjustments necessary, and all operations smooth.

2. Tools of the Trade

This review gives second place to the Bosch 4100DG-09, with praise for its safety features and arbor lock. The digital fence gauge is judged "a bit fussy" for jobsite work by a crew, but fine for work by one person. The stand is judged easy to roll around but hard to unfold.

3. Fine Woodworking Tools & Shops 2009

This review compares six portable table saws equipped with riving knives, giving top ranking to the Bosch 4100-09 -- with praise for its power, arbor lock, stand and accessories. It's also quieter than most.

4. GaryMKatz.com

This detailed single-product review by a frequent contributor to Fine Woodworking magazine includes photos of the new blade guard system on the Bosch 4100 series, as well as of the digital rip fence.

5. Fine Woodworking

This brief review reports that the Bosch 4100DG-09 saw handles 1.75-inch hard maple nearly as well as 0.75-inch plywood, and praises the saw for easy blade changes and an exceptional blade guard system that includes a riving knife. The only drawback is the "sticky, somewhat clunky" blade-lock lever.

Review: Portable Saw Fits the Bill in a Small Woodworking Shop, Anissa Kapsales, April 2008

6. Popular Woodworking

Editors name the Bosch 4100 table saw one of the best new tools for 2007, noting that it's "powerful enough for most woodworking tasks" and praising the European-style blade guard system as "a vast improvement over standard U.S. guards."

7. Amazon.com

More than a dozen owners reviewing the Bosch 4100DG-09 portable table saw give it mostly rave reviews. The digital fence gets somewhat mixed reviews.

9. Taunton Tool Guide 2007

This review, based on earlier comparison tests in Fine Homebuilding, is too old to cover the Bosch 4100 but gives top ranking to the earlier Bosch 4000-09 that lacks the new blade guard system. Readers of Fine Woodworking and Fine Homebuilding agree.

10. ConsumerReports.org

This review doesn't cover any saws in the Bosch 4100 series, but compares the Bosch 4000-09 (the forerunner to the 4100DG-09) with nine other portable table saws. All ten saws are rated for accuracy, speed, ease of use, rip precision and edge finish, but not for safety features.
