The DeWalt DW744X is a medium-size portable table saw with telescoping rails that provide enough capacity to rip a 4-foot panel in half, while taking up less space than a contractor saw. The saw comes with a folding stand. Reviews praise the rack-and-pinion fence on the DeWalt DW744X, and say the miter gauge and tool-free blade guard (with riving knife) are also quite good. The DeWalt DW744X lacks a zero-clearance insert for cutting tiny strips, but Leecraft makes one for it (*Est. $22). The saw is also available with a folding stand with wheels as the DeWalt DW744XRS (*Est. $630) . Both carry three-year warranties. For the most convenient rolling stand, though, consider the Bosch 4100-09 (*Est. $550) , which comes with a Gravity-Rise stand and also bevels past 45 degrees.
The DeWalt DW744X is included in two big roundup reviews of portable table saws, at Fine Homebuilding (reported in the 2011 Taunton Tool Guide) and Tools of the Trade. We also found helpful comments and ratings from users at Amazon.com, CPOPowerTools.com, Lowes.com and HomeDepot.com.

1. Taunton's 2011 Tool Guide
Tests here compare the DeWalt DW744X with five other portable table saws from major brands, all of which have riving knives. Objective tests include table flatness, miter slot/blade parallelism, blade runout and decibel level. Power and accuracy are also considered, as are specifications, special features and overall convenience. Though editors call the DeWalt a solid performer -- with a very good miter gauge, riving knife/blade guard assembly and rack-and-pinion fence -- they judge the Ridgid R4510 a better value. The DeWalt edges out the Ridgid, however, in annual reader surveys at Fine Homebuilding and Fine Woodworking. The DeWalt DW744X pictured here is equipped with a rolling stand, but the basic saw is the same as that of the DW744X with a plain folding stand.

2. Tools of the Trade
This excellent comparison test also covers the DeWalt DW744 equipped with a rolling stand; the basic saw is still the same. DeWalt also added a riving knife; the basic design is still the same. The DeWalt edges out the Bosch 4100DG-09 as the top pick, based on several weeks of actual jobsite use by a professional crew on a variety of remodeling and construction jobs. The fence proves accurate even under rough conditions. The only drawback is that the DeWalt saw lacks a cord wrap.

3. Amazon.com
More than two dozen owners review the DeWalt DW744X portable table saw here. Most are happy with it, especially for its power and accuracy. One says "The best feature is the rack and pinion fence adjustment. It comes with 1/16 inch graduations, but the adjustment is precise enough to allow cutting to 1/32 inch tolerances. I don't even measure my cuts when using the fence because the fence scale provides more accuracy than I could get with a pencil line." Another owner says he's used the saw happily for over 13 years.

6. HomeDepot.com
Fewer than a dozen owners review the DeWalt DW744X table saw here, but at the time of our report every one of them says they'd recommend it to a friend. The fence earns high praise, as does the overall build quality; one owner has been using the saw for eight years. The only main drawback is its loud noise.
