Reviewers say that the current Apple iPad (*Est. $500 and up) might have taken the best tablet crown, but the less costly Apple iPad 2 still rates highly overall. The iPad 2 is slightly thinner and lighter than the iPad, which makes the tablet easier to hold for long periods. Reviewers report that the tablet feels fast and responsive during use -- among the best around. Battery life is up to 11 hours in some tests. While the dual cameras are helpful for FaceTime video chatting, their quality is largely panned in reviews. The below-average 1,024-by-768-pixel display resolution draws some critical remarks as well, especially after the unveiling of the current iPad's pixel-packed Retina display. If you prefer the Android operating system, reviewers recommend the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime (*Est. $500 and up) . The Transformer Prime is lighter, thinner and more powerful than the iPad 2 and supports a highly regarded optional keyboard dock, but its assortment of apps falls far short of the thousands available for the Apple tablets.
The iPad 2, which comes in black or white, is now only available with 16 GB of storage capacity, in either Wi-Fi-only (*Est. $400) or Wi-Fi + 3G (*Est. $530) versions. If you want 4G, you'll need to opt for the iPad. Data plans for the Wi-Fi + 3G version are available from Verizon and AT&T but don't require an annual commitment.
Apple falters in the technical support category; While the one year limited warranty is standard, the company provides free phone help only for 90 days after purchase. You can buy two years of additional support for $100, though you'll need to pay an additional $50 if you need to send your tablet back for repairs. Free "Genius Bar" help is available at Apple Stores, but it requires an appointment, and users report that the assistance can be hit-and-miss.
The Apple iPad 2 is widely reviewed. The best analysis comes from PCMag.com, Laptop Magazine, CNET, Macworld and Engadget.com. These sources test and rate the iPad 2, and most do a good job of comparing the iPad 2 to competing tablets. Single-product reviews at The New York Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal's All Things D aren't as detailed, but they provide helpful critiques.

Like many reviewers, Walt Mossberg say the iPad 2 isn't a must-have upgrade for first-generation iPad owners. However, the iPad 2 is noticeably faster than its predecessor, and battery life remains a high point. The cameras aren't that great, however, and the iPad 2 lacks support for Flash video.

David Pogue says the iPad 2 hasn't changed significantly compared to the first-generation model, but it feels very different, in a very good way. "My friends, I'm telling you: just that much improvement in thinness, weight and speed transforms the experience," he says.
