Best tax software for complex returns
- Intuitive interview
- Superior guidance and support
- Good for complex returns
- Extra tools not useful for basic filers
- Expensive
Intuit TurboTax Premier tax preparation software is the nearly unanimous choice of reviewers, who call it the best tax package overall. TurboTax features a comprehensive interview process, including such complicated topics as multiple stock sales, business deductions, depreciation, mortgage refinancing, rental income and expenses, and reviewers praise its guidance and comprehensive support for less common scenarios. TurboTax Premier includes federal software and one free download of state software; federal and state electronic filing cost an additional $17.95 each. However, if you don't need the extra tools for stock sales or rental property, experts say Intuit TurboTax Deluxe 2007 (*est. $45) is the better buy.
Intuit TurboTax is the most frequently reviewed tax preparation software on the market; we consulted particularly thorough tests by PC Magazine and two separate guides (for financial software and taxes) at About.com.

Carroll tries out H&R Block TaxCut Home & Business, Intuit TurboTax Home & Business and TaxACT Deluxe and State for the 2007 tax year. TurboTax retains a tiny edge over TaxCut; Carroll says TaxCut's interface isn't as polished, and the software doesn't do quite as good a job of maximizing deductions.

2. About.com
About.com's guide to financial software reviews the 2007 versions of TaxCut and TurboTax (although it's unclear which version of the Intuit software is being reviewed), calling both programs comprehensive and reliable. Elmblad is not a tax professional, but has impressive expertise with financial software, and the fact that her choice of the better program differs from last year is a strong indication of objectivity.
