March 2012: A new version of this software is available. Please see our review of TurboTax Deluxe 2011 (*Est. $50).
February 2011: TurboTax Deluxe tax preparation software won't be of much help if you're dealing with multiple stock sales or rental property income -- that's when you need TurboTax Premier 2010 (Discontinued) instead -- but reviewers say it does a good job with most common federal and state tax issues, including tax breaks for things like home mortgages and child care. TurboTax Deluxe features videos and extra help for itemized deductions (Schedule A) and charitable contributions, but no advanced help for investments or rental property income.
TurboTax Deluxe is available as boxed/downloadable software for your desktop or as an online service. The desktop version includes five free federal e-files and one free state software download, but you'll pay an extra $20 to e-file a state return. TurboTax Deluxe Online (*Est. $30) costs less, but it includes only one federal e-file and no state software (you'll pay another $37 to prepare and e-file your state tax return). All versions are compatible with Windows and Mac. The cheaper TurboTax Basic 2010 (*Est. $30 desktop/$20 online) only covers federal income taxes and does not include the charitable contribution tool; for the money, reviewers prefer TaxACT Online Ultimate 2010 (Discontinued), which – unlike TurboTax – includes free state e-filing.
TurboTax tax preparation software doesn't suffer for attention from reviewers. About.com's guide to financial software reviews the online deluxe version, and PCMag.com tests the Premier version. MarketWatch.com compares TurboTax with its competitors based on features. We found plenty of user reviews for the deluxe version at Amazon.com.

This review is for the step-up TurboTax Premier version, but TurboTax Deluxe is very similar minus some specific guidance for investments, etc. Tax expert Kathy Yakal tests tax-prep programs every year and, as usual, this year she finds TurboTax easier to use than others.

The TurboTax lineup earns general praise from MarketWatch.com's Eva Rosenberg. Rosenberg singles out TurboTax's great visuals, donated-item valuation feature and other helpful extras.

Shelley Elmblad, About.com's guide to financial software, tests the online deluxe version of TurboTax -- but her recommendation is for TurboTax in general. She gives TurboTax a perfect 5-star score. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)

4. Amazon.com
TurboTax Deluxe is the most reviewed tax software program at Amazon.com, although it earns only 3.5 stars (out of 5) overall. Most users like it, but several were peeved to find out that state e-filing costs $20 extra; based on the "Federal + e-File + State 2010" name, they say they thought it was included. Some also report problems installing the software with Windows 7.
