We found lots of useful reviews of the 2009 edition of TurboTax. PCMag.com provides the most in-depth coverage, looking at the online version of TurboTax Premier 2009, and we found plenty of user reviews for boxed version of this 2009 tax-year software at Amazon.com. MarketWatch.com and two separate guides (for financial software and taxes) at About.com test different versions of TurboTax2009 alongside their top rival, H&R Block At Home.

Tax expert Kathy Yakal tests the online versions of four top tax programs -- TurboTax, H&R Block At Home, TaxACT and CompleteTax -- by using them to complete dummy returns. Her usual favorite, TurboTax, wins again this year. She finds TurboTax Online Premier the most usable program, with the best tax guidance.

2. About.com

Here is the only expert who seems to perennially choose H&R Block tax software over TurboTax. Shelley Elmblad, About.com's guide to financial software, says both programs offer good tax guidance, but H&R Block At Home costs less and includes free personalized support in case of an audit. 3. About.com

TurboTax gets 4 out of 5 stars from tax professional William Perez, About.com's guide to taxes. He says it provides good guidance for most tricky tax situations, but he had a hard time figuring out where to report a home foreclosure. The problem with this review is that you can't tell which tax year Perez tested. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)

4. MarketWatch.com

MarketWatch.com's Eva Rosenberg doesn't come right out and name a favorite, but she seems to like TurboTax and H&R Block At Home better than the other online tax-prep services she reviews here. Rosenberg especially likes TurboTax's helpful extras, like a feature that provides values for donated items, and its "terrific diagnostics" to find errors in a return.

5. Amazon.com

TurboTax software gets the highest ratings overall from users at Amazon.com, although the balance of the some 200 ratings aren't much better than mediocre. Many of the negative comments come from buyers who are annoyed that they had to pay $20 extra to e-file their state taxes – despite the software's all-inclusive-sounding "Federal + State 2009 + eFile" name.
