TurboTax Premier 2010

Pros
  • Intuitive interview process
  • Superior guidance and support
  • Good for complex returns
Cons
  • Extra tools not useful for basic filers
  • Expensive
  • Charges extra to e-file a state return

March 2012: A new version of this software is available. Please see our review of TurboTax Premiere 2011 (*Est. $75).

February 2011: If your tax return is complex, reviews overwhelmingly recommend TurboTax Premier as the best tax-preparation software to help you through. TurboTax features a comprehensive interview process, including such complicated topics as multiple stock sales, business deductions, depreciation, mortgage refinancing, rental income and expenses, and reviewers praise its guidance and comprehensive support for less common scenarios.

The boxed and downloadable versions of TurboTax Premier include federal software and one free download of state software; state electronic filing costs an additional $20 each, but five free federal e-files are included with each package. If you need only one federal e-file and no state software -- and you don't mind doing your taxes via a secure Internet site -- you can save some money by using TurboTax Premier Online 2010 (*Est. $50). All versions are compatible with Windows and Mac. However, if you don't need the extra tools for stock sales or rental property, experts say TurboTax Deluxe 2010 (Discontinued) is a better buy (it costs $30 for the online version). If you have a straightforward tax return, or don't need much assistance, TaxACT Online Ultimate 2010 (Discontinued) is fast, accurate, and a great value -- even e-filing of a state return is included at no extra charge.

We found lots of useful reviews of TurboTax. PCMag.com and The New York Times provide the most in-depth coverage, testing TurboTax Premier with actual or dummy tax returns. About.com tests TurboTax Deluxe, but expert Shelley Elmblad recommends all versions of TurboTax. MarketWatch.com compares TurboTax with its rivals based on their features. We found plenty of user reviews for boxed version of this software at Amazon.com.
