Dear Bodum: It's been nice knowing you., November 18, 2009

Dear Bodum, It's been nice knowing you. This is the last of your products I own and the last I will ever own. Your IBIS Electric kettle looked great and worked great for a couple years and then it started having these 'intermittent' connection issues which other reviewers have pointed out. It also has some evidence of melting plastic around said connection. As it currently stands I am sliding a spoon between the base and the front bottom edge of the kettle in order to force the connection. I don't anticipate this solution to be lasting, so here I am at Amazon in search of a replacement. First it was the GRANOS espresso machine that quit over electrical problems and crazy amounts of water leaking from who knows where. Next it was the lipstick vacuum thermos that I got for Christmas one year--it leaked almost from day one and your customer service refused to replace it. Eventually the metal screen on my french press gave way (out-built and out-performed by an off brand press that is still kicking it) and now the IBIS. Is this really how you want it to be? Known for good design and poor follow through? All bark and no bite? The thing is, your products look great and I truly do want to be friends but it's complicated. We can't go on like this. Please let me know if you change your mind in favor of building something lasting and honest. Regretfully, Ryan Update 11/18/09: I sent a similar letter to Bodum customer service, and just received the following customer service reply. "Hi, Ryan Thank you for your email. I'm sorry for your frustration but I have a New Ibis coming out this week and it's totally different from the other ones, we even have them a [sic] 4 different colors which are Black, Red, Green and Off White which are very nice and trust me this has a new base and will last for a long time. Actually you can see it in our website which is [...] and search for water kettles and you will see it their [sic]. Thanks, xxxxx"

Perfect unit for 2!!!!!!!!, November 12, 2009

You will not be disappointed with this kettle. It heats up FAST. Mainly bought it to use with the Bodum French Press (which makes THE best coffee I've ever tasted). PLUS, I've always wanted to drink more tea when getting home from work but never wanted to spend the time heating up a standard kettle on the stove, etc, etc. I swear: from filling the kettle with filtered water to wrapping my hands around a hot cup of tea takes less than 10 minutes.

Defective switch, March 6, 2009
this particular model has a defective switch. I know abpout 3 cases when the switch stopped woprking within months of purchase. in this case it happened right away. No good.
Defective switch construction, February 28, 2009
The switch started flickering and not functioning properly very soon. Returned for a refund but have not heard from them in weeks!
No refund either!
Superb electric kettle, February 21, 2009
We bought this kettle to replace an identical Bodum model that we had for 4 1/2 years. After using it 3-4 times a day during that period the contacts finally wore out. We have found the replacement to be very satisfactory.

The Bodum Ibis Electric cordless kettle is listed as second out of eight kettles. A short review says it boils fast and the carafe is easily lifted from its base, but it isn't clear whether Sean Paajanen tested this kettle or examined its features.
