The 2-quart Oxo Uplift is recommended most often in comparison tests of electric tea kettles. However, recent owner complaints give us pause. Experts say it's well-designed; it boils water quickly and comes with a lifetime warranty. Owners like the easy-grip coated handle, which stays cool to the touch. However, owners also say it has build-quality issues, including broken handles, rust and leaks. Some also say the whistle is annoyingly high pitched. Overall, we found somewhat better owner-written reviews for the KitchenAid Gourmet Essentials 2-Quart Kettle (*Est. $50).

Slate.com has the best comparison review of tea kettles. Seth Stevenson includes the Oxo Uplift in tests, along with stovetop and electric models. Reviews from a few other online sources, such as ApartmentTherapy.com and Real Simple, give insight, though they seem to be based on looks and manufacturer-stated features rather than trial runs. We also found more than 100 owner-written reviews for the Oxo Uplift on Amazon.com.

Our Sources

1. Slate.com

This review pans stovetop kettles as sluggish, but it does provide great side-by-side comparisons of how well a variety of tea kettles performed in tests. Seth Stevenson tests seven kettles and says if you must go with a stovetop kettle, the Oxo Uplift is the best. He likes its design and the fact that it boils water quickly (for a stovetop kettle). Unlike some users, he likes the sound of its whistle, though it's a bit weak, he says.

2. Apartment Therapy.com

Unlike other reviewers, this website's editors prefer stovetop kettles to electric models. Their top two choices are the Revere Whistling Tea Kettle and a "classic Chinese restaurant" tea kettle. A short review of the Oxo Uplift praises the kettle for pouring easily, but says it seems "over-engineered."

3. Amazon.com

The Oxo Uplift has received more than 100 owner-written reviews at Amazon.com, but its overall rating is average. Some say it's easy to use, and most love its design. But not all are thrilled with the whistle and some say it stopped working entirely. Others say its build quality or durability is poor.

4. Real Simple

This write-up is less a review than recommendations for two kettles, one stovetop and one electric. The Oxo Good Grips Uplift is noted for its comfortable handle, wide top and spout. There's no indication that it was tested by editors, however.

5. Epinions.com

Reviewers either love or hate their Oxo Uplift. Reviews are centered on its design. Most say it looks great, but some say that water dribbles out of the spout while boiling and that they have to empty the kettle while not in use to prevent rusting.
