Our Assessment

While Wal-Mart's selection of tube TVs isn't particularly impressive, what's here attracts more user reviews than any other site on the Internet. The write-ups themselves are usually brief, but they do include sub-ratings for picture quality, sound quality and features. They also provide ratings for how well the TV meets expectation and provides value for the price paid. Reviewers supply information on how long they've owned the product and how often they use it.

Tube TVs

Our Assessment Sears has only a handful of standard TVs, and many are novelty sets. However, there is still more feedback here than at many sites, The reviews themselves are on the brief side, but do include sub-ratings for performance, image quality and more, as well as an overall rating.

Tube TVs

Our Assessment Best Buy is the only retailer to offer Dynex-branded tube TVs, and those sets dominate the listings. Like Sears.com, the tube TVs that are here get fewer reviews than at WalMart.com, and the write-ups themselves lack Wal-Mart's and Sears.com's detailed sub-ratings. A bottom-line "Would you recommend this product to a friend?" assessment can be helpful.

Our Assessment

Like other online retailers, Amazon.com invites owners to share their experiences with potential buyers. While many more sets are listed here than at other sites, that includes numerous discontinued models, which makes browsing difficult. Another shortcoming is that most current tube TVs have fewer reviews than at sites we rate higher. Still, Amazon.com might be worth a visit, as the user reviewers here are sometimes detailed and helpful.

Our Assessment

While discussions can sometimes go off track, this user-to-user discussion site provides lots of information about everything and anything related to home entertainment, including a forum dedicated to direct-view TVs. Sets from popular manufacturers often get their own "official" thread that includes discussions of specifications, features, problems, fixes and more, as well as reviews. Of late, most of the discussions here have centered on now-discontinued models.

6. Epinions.com

Standard Televisions
by Contributors to Epinions
Our Assessment Epinions offers the same advantages and drawbacks as the owner-written commentary found at WalMart.com, Amazon.com and similar sites. However, most models, especially current models, get few if any reviews, making this a far less useful resource. Still, Epinions can be worth a visit, as the reviews that are posted tend to be more in-depth than those at the retailer sites.
