Budget high-performance all-season tires
- Low price
- Best-in-class traction on winter roads
- Low rolling resistance
- No treadwear warranty
- Average performance on wet and dry roads
January 2009. Consumer Reports has the best comparison test of the Continental ContiExtremeContact, ranking it against 14 other ultra-high-performance all-season tires. The Tire Rack's expert test compares the ContiExtremeContact with only three other tires, but it includes much more narrative detail than Consumer Reports. The Tire Rack is also by far the best source for owner-written reviews; only a handful of owner reviews for the ContiExtremeContact are posted at Epinions.com, and several of those are dated. Manufacturers' official treadwear, traction and heat-resistance ratings are posted at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.
For high performance on a budget, reviews recommend the Continental ContiExtremeContact. No all-season tire gets a better grip on winter roads in tests. The ContiExtremeContact displays a low rolling resistance in one top test, which can translate into better gas mileage. However, it isn't the top performer on wet or dry roads. Some sources find the ContiExtremeContact also wears faster than other highly rated performance tires, which owners say is the trade-off for better winter traction. If you don't need the Continental's winter grip, reviews say the Michelin Primacy MXV4 (*est. $130) is a better all-around performance tire, and it carries a 60,000-mile treadwear warranty.

The Continental ContiExtremeContact ties for third in this test of four high-performance all-season tires by staff members at The Tire Rack, a retail site. Although the review notes the ContiExtremeContact's "reputation for best-in-class winter traction," this tire doesn't perform as well as some others on wet and dry roads.
