January 2009. The Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 is one of the best tires to drive on wet roads, experts and owners say. The Eagle F1 GS-D3 consistently beats other high-performance summer tires in expert tests on wet surfaces, and owners report that this tire's refusal to hydroplane has probably saved their lives. Critics say the Eagle F1 GS-D3 matches or exceeds even the top-ranked summer performance tire, the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 (*est. $185), when it comes to hydroplaning. This tire also doesn't wear out as quickly as other high-performance tires, according to reviews. However, the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 outshines the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 on dry roads, and testers find the PS2 more comfortable to drive. The differences are slight, though, and critics recommend the Eagle F1 GS-D3 as a solid all-around summer tire that is extra-capable on wet roads. Note that this tire cannot be driven in cold weather; if you need an all-season performance tire, reviews recommend the Michelin Primacy MXV4 (*est. $130) most highly.

Consumer Reports includes the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 in its comparison test of high-performance summer tires, which is the most extensive and detailed review we found. The Tire Rack and Car and Driver also conduct expert tests on both wet and dry roads, although they compare fewer tires. The Eagle F1 GS-D3 has accumulated a massive number of owner reviews at The Tire Rack. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website is the place to find government-mandated tire ratings, from tests conducted by the manufacturers.

With nearly 2,200 ratings posted by owners at this retail site, the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 maintains a second-place rating among max-performance summer tires, right behind the venerable Michelin Pilot Sport PS2. Although the PS2 outshines the Goodyear on almost every measure, owners say the Goodyear does offer better treadwear and an incredible ability to resist hydroplaning.
