We found the best review of the Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus tire at Consumer Reports, which compares it with 18 other performance all-season tires in a series of objective tests and ratings. The Canadian Automobile Protection Association also tests the MXV4 Plus, but that group only compares it with seven other tires. Many cars come equipped with this tire, so more than 1,600 owners have posted reviews of it at TireRack.com. The environmental organization Green Seal also reviews the Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus and compares its effects on gas mileage to those of 50 other tires. The manufacturer's official tire ratings, posted at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration site, are also useful.

The Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus is an all-season tire for cars that earns points for stability, long life and gas mileage, though it is expensive. It's considered a grand touring high-performance tire, and it's designed for superior handling and heat-resistance at high speeds. While reviews praise its treadwear, some owners report durability problems. It also gets mixed reviews for traction. Some comparison tests and owners report excellent traction on wet or dry surfaces, but others disagree. If the Michelin tires seem too expensive, consider the most-recommended regular all-season tire, the Goodyear Assurance TripleTred (*est. $105).

1. ConsumerReports.org

Consumer Reports compares the Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus with 18 other performance all-season tires and ranks them based on a series of objective tests and ratings. 2. Automobile Protection Association

This review by a Canadian nonprofit organization compares the Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus with seven comparable performance tires, calling it durable, reliable and stable at high speeds. Traction is good on dry pavement and average -- for a performance tire -- on wet.

3. Tire Rack

Over 1,600 owners rate the Michelin Energy MXV4 tire here with mixed enthusiasm and place it squarely in the middle of the pack. Owners give it above-average scores for quiet comfort and stability, but rate it a bit lower for traction on wet surfaces and resistance to hydroplaning -- and even lower for traction on snow and ice.

4. GreenSeal.org

Based on tests of 51 tires, the Michelin Energy MXV4 is one of 17 tires recommended by this environmental organization for improving gas mileage. The MXV4 also earns decent marks for durability and treadwear, but the review doesn't explain why quite a few owners don't plan to buy this tire again.

5. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

NHTSA requires manufacturers to test their tires for treadwear, traction and heat resistance, and to label the tires with these ratings. The Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus gets an above-average rating for treadwear, an A for traction on wet pavement (out of a maximum rating of AA), and an A in heat resistance.
