It handles everything from a 4-pound chicken to a full-size pizza, and its convection setting speeds up the cooking process. Breaking it down

Performance

A top performer across the board. In professional tests, the Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven excels at every cooking task -- it bakes, roasts, broils, reheats and toasts food uniformly at a temperature that remains consistent throughout the cooking time. Owners agree, saying it works as well as their full-sized ovens for all but the biggest tasks (it can't handle a big turkey, for example). However, it is roomy enough to handle a 4-pound chicken or six slices of toast. An automatic timer shuts the oven off when cooking is complete and the convection setting means foods cook up to 30 percent faster, something busy cooks appreciate.

Ease of use

Quick and intuitively simple. The Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven's large dial controls are easy to set and the bright LCD is very readable, so setting the oven is quick and intuitive, say experts and owners. The interior racks automatically slide out halfway when the door is opened for easy food removal. A pizza pan, bake pan and broiler rack are included. Cleanup is simple with the stainless exterior, nonstick interior and a removable, front-loading pullout crumb tray, but accessories need to be washed by hand.

Appearance/durability

A bit of a space hog. Reviewers say the Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven looks good on the countertop thanks to its stainless steel housing and classic, beefy design, but it takes up a lot of space. We read a few reports of durability issues within about 2 or 3 years, too short of a time for such an expensive oven, disgruntled owners grouse. Customer service seems to be a mixed bag, many say it was excellent and their oven was replaced with no hassle, and others say they got no help at all -- although, it seems that in many of those cases the oven was beyond its one-year warranty period.

Katie Pilkington says it's sturdy and is a good performer, but that the cooking presets don't work well -- a criticism we don't see reflected in user reviews. She also points out that the word "smart" has a different connotation in this age of smart phones; however, this oven was named long before that cultural shift.
