Seventh Generation is one of the most environmentally responsible toilet paper brands on the market, reviews say. It's bleached without chlorinated pollutants and made of 100 percent recycled paper, with 80 percent post-consumer content (such as recycled office paper and newspapers) -- unlike the cheaper recycled brand Marcal Small Steps Bath Tissue (*Est. $7 for 12 rolls), which uses mostly paper factory scraps. Two-ply Seventh Generation is also judged to be softer than other recycled brands, although not as cushy as ultra-plush toilet papers such as Quilted Northern Soft & Strong (*Est. $5 for six rolls) that are made from virgin wood fibers (harvested from freshly cut trees) and bleached with chlorine dioxide.
Several sources rank Seventh Generation 100% Recycled Bath Tissue directly against other brands, both recycled and non-recycled: ConsumerReports.org bases its rankings on lab tests of softness and strength, the Natural Resources Defense Council on environmental friendliness and the environmental news site Grist.org on real-life performance. We also found user ratings at Amazon.com and EcoHuddle.com.
