Reviewers highly rate the American Standard Compact Cadet 3 FloWise for its performance and efficiency. The flush only uses 1.28 gallons of water, yet is able to fully remove up to 1,000 grams of solid waste in tests -- that's at the top of the performance range for any toilet. This toilet also has a glaze applied to the inside the bowl, which inhibits the growth of bacteria. It includes a seat and is tall enough to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, but others also like the higher height too. The five-year warranty period is longer than some brands. If a lower price is more important than water efficiency, the Toto Drake CST744S (*Est. $255) costs less but uses more water at 1.6 gallons per flush.

Editors test liquid waste removal using a blue dye and solid-waste removal using plastic balls, latex cylinders and sponges weighted with screws to simulate human waste. Noise level during flushing is evaluated with the seat removed.

Engineers evaluate more than 1,200 toilet models using extruded soybean paste and wads of toilet paper to simulate the real-world demands on a toilet. Each toilet must remove waste in a single flush without clogging in at least four out of five tests. The minimum performance standard is removal of 250 grams of solid waste, but the American Standard Compact Cadet 3 FloWise 2403.128 successfully removes up to 1,000 grams.
