TOTO Eco UltraMax MS853113E

Pros
  • Meets WaterSense certification
  • One-piece design is easy to clean
  • Simple technology
  • Softclose seat eliminates clanking
Cons
  • More expensive than two-piece toilets
  • Average solid-waste removal

February 2009. Reviewers have long praised the TOTO UltraMax MS854114S (*est. $405) as the best one-piece gravity toilet on the market, and now TOTO has introduced a 1.28-gpf version of the UltraMax that meets the EPA's WaterSense certification, the TOTO Eco UltraMax MS853113E. Though it's only about half as powerful as the non-certified Gerber Ultra Flush 21-312 (*est. $325[D1] ), the TOTO still flushes 550 grams of solid waste per flush, well above the minimum 350 grams established by the EPA's WaterSense program. Also, because it doesn't use any fancy technology in its tank, the TOTO is easy to maintain and repair, experts say. Consumers give this rounded-front toilet excellent reviews, and the soft-close seat receives kudos for eliminating the loud clanking associated with a dropped toilet seat. Finally, this toilet's one-piece design makes it easier to clean than two-piece toilets. If you don't want to spend so much, you may want to consider the two-piece TOTO Drake CST744S (*est. $240), which also gets high marks from reviewers.

The TOTO Eco UltraMax MS853113E is tested in the Maximum Performance (MaP) Testing of Popular Toilet Models 13th Edition. Owners post their comments at HomeClick.com.

For this edition of the test, testers were given the choice of soybean paste encased in a latex membrane "similar to a sausage" or uncased media to test toilet performance. Results are constantly updated and are charted by manufacturer and toilet performance. The TOTO Eco UltraMax MS853113E flushes 550 grams of simulated solid waste per flush. It also meets the EPA's WaterSense guidelines for conservation.
