The Salsa Bowl
by Editors of the Hartford Courant
Our Assessment

Twelve tortilla chip brands go head to head in this tasting. Nature's Promise Natural Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips are substantial and full of corn flavor, but editors refer to them as a store brand, so we're not sure if they're available nationwide. Tasters felt that Frontera chips packed plenty of corn flavor, but they were under-salted. Santitas were well liked, if a bit "greasy." Whole Foods' 365 Organic Chips are "run of the mill," lamented testers. This review is the most recent we found.

Chips and Salsa
by Editors of Consumer Reports
Our Assessment Consumer Reports tried 12 chip brands, "judging each on the intensity of its flavor and checking for flaws such as greasiness, toughness, and old-oil flavor." Each chip is briefly described, but tasters' credentials are not discussed. This review is outdated, but most of the tested varieties are still available.

Which Chips are Worth Their Weight in Salsa?
by Melissa Clark
Our Assessment

Real Simple's panel tasted 14 tortilla chips brands, one of which fared far better than the others: Tostitos Natural Yellow Corn Chips. Green Mountain Gringo Tortilla Strips earned second prize for being "blander" than the winner. Santitas White Corn Triangles and Bravos Crispy Rounds both failed the bean-dip challenge (they broke under the dip's weight). Editors take it for granted that tortilla chips will be paired with dips, not eaten plain. We wish that they had recommended a chip that's good enough to eat out of hand.

Tortilla Chips
by Editors of Cook's Country
Our Assessment

Editors sample nine brands of tortilla chips and find that they prefer "light and crispy," fine-textured chips over coarser chips made from stone-ground corn. Among the brands tested are Santitas Authentic Mexican Style White Corn Tortilla Chips, Tostitos Restaurant Style Chips and Natural Tostitos Yellow Corn Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips. Only subscribers can access this report, which, like the Consumer Reports review, is fairly dated.

Our Assessment

Editors at Eating Well taste six brands of tortilla chips (some baked, some fried), crowning R.W. Garcia Stone Ground the winner. Not only did they have a "wholesome look and great corn flavor," they include 4 grams of fiber and just 40 milligrams of sodium per serving. Santitas White Corn chips were the runners-up. Tostitos Natural Corn are "perfect for nachos." Losers included Baked Tostitos, Guiltless Gourmet Yellow Corn and Snyder's Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips.

Snack Foods
by Editors of Consumer Reports
Our Assessment Editors taste-test low- or reduced-fat versions of snack foods against their full-fat counterparts. Tasters like the full-fat versions better, but some of the low-fat varieties are okay. Editors tested 11 snacks in all, but not all are tortilla chips.

Light and Salty Wins the Corn Chip Taste Test
by Carol Ness
Our Assessment Tasters at the San Francisco Chronicle tried 12 brands of tortilla chips and unanimously chose Santitas Triangles as the winner. Tasters liked their "nice snap" and "very corny" flavor. Trader Joe's Organic Chips place second, while Tostitos Restaurant Style garner third place. Guiltless Gourmet finishes last. This article is dated, and the brands may have changed their recipes.

Gourmet Tortilla Chips
by Editors of The Nibble
Our Assessment

Taste testers at The Nibble crunched their way through 12 tortilla chip brands, finding mass-market chips "dusty and bland, with no corn flavor." Frontera Foods earns the nod as editors' favorite chip line. Chips from Rosa Mexicano, a mini-chain of Mexican restaurants, tie for first place with the best corn flavor. Xochitl Topos de Ma'z was deemed "bland," and the bottom of the bag was full of crumbs.

by Editors of Health.com
Our Assessment Editors of Health.com rate FoodShouldTasteGood's Chocolate Tortilla Chips, which include Dutch-processed cocoa in the ingredient list. Editors have mixed feelings about these chips: Some find them weird or puzzling, while others find them "unusually delicious." One tester said he would dip them in ice cream. Ultimately, they are "worth trying for oddball-flavor fans."

Tortilla Chips
by Editors of Taquitos.net
Our Assessment

Editors at this snack-food blog have posted reviews of more than 280 tortilla chips varieties, including some that are truly bizarre. If you have been wondering how Doritos Peking Duck chips taste, wonder no more. Write-ups are brief, and oddly, the site doesn't allow consumers to post comments. We have no idea who the testers are or how they qualified as "Certified Snack Evaluators." With a little more transparency, we'd give this site a higher rating.

Light Frito-Lay Potato Chips: Tostitos Light Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips
by Editors of Calorista.com
Our Assessment

Calorista.com details low-calorie food options for its readers. Editors have high marks for Tostitos Light Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips, giving them a four-star rating for calorie content and a maximum five-star score for taste, which they call "great." Their brief summary notes that the chips contain Olestra, and they caution that some people experience gastrointestinal problems because of the additive, saying, "proceed at your own risk (and preferably not at work or on a first date)!"
