If you have the space and it you're ready to take the step into the next level of environmental consciousness, you may want to consider investing in a compost bin. A bin will convert your organic garbage (banana peels, pizza crusts, etc.) into compost, which you can then use to fertilize your lawn or garden (and if you don't have a lawn or garden, you can donate the compost to a neighbor or community recycling center).
A compost bin won't entirely eliminate your need for garbage bags, since you'll still have to dispose of non-organic waste. However, you'll cut down your use of plastic considerably. ConsumerSearch has a companion report on the best compost bins.
