TV-DVD Combinations

Our Assessment

Online retailer Amazon.com gives users a chance to weigh in on TV-DVD player combos that they own. While the reviews can vary greatly in quality and length, some are quite good and informative. One negative is that there are many discontinued models included, so navigation can be tedious. Toshiba TV-DVD combos do particularly well here, with the 15-inch 15LV505 particularly noteworthy for its great grades following lots of feedback. The 19-inch Toshiba 19LV505 and 19LV506 also do very well, but results are more mixed for the 22-inch 22LV505. For those interested in a bigger screen TV-DVD combo, the 26-inch Sharp LC26DV24U and 32-inch LG 32LG40 seem to please, but neither set attracts that many reviews.

Our Assessment

User reviews at BestBuy.com include top-line assessments of pros and cons, as well as a bottom-line assessment of whether or not the reviewer would recommend the product to a friend. In addition, navigation is easy since BestBuy.com places both the rating and the number of reviews each TV-DVD player combo has received on the main page. Sets offered under Best Buy's Insignia house brand get the most feedback, but don't score particularly well with owners. Toshiba's 19-inch 19LV505 gets a fair share of feedback as well and rates notably better. Toshiba's 22-inch 22LV505 also scores well but has fewer reviews.

Flat-Panel TVs

Our Assessment

CNet.com only reviews TV-DVD player combos on rare occasions, and does not even include a category for those products. However, it does offer an in-depth look at the 32-inch LG 32LG40 and comes away generally impressed despite giving it only a so-so "very good" rating. No other combos are reviewed but most are listed on this massive site. Some have a handful of user reviews. The easiest way to find those is to search by model number.

LG 32LG40 Review
by Robert Heron
Our Assessment PC Magazine reviews TV-DVD combos only on rare occasion, but does report on the 32-inch LG 32LG40. Accurate colors and good picture detail are spoiled slightly by light black levels that are bothersome mainly in dimly lit settings. Testing is extensive and well explained.

TV/DVD/VCR Combo Reviews
by Contributors to Buzzillions.com
Our Assessment

Buzzillions.com aggregates user reviews from mainly small and midsize Internet retailers -- though reviews from BestBuy.com are also included. Most reviews include lists of pros, cons and best uses, along with a statement as to whether or not the owner would recommend the TV-DVD combo to a friend. Depending on the source, the identity of some reviewers is verified. Two Toshiba sets are runaway choices in terms of ratings and number of reviews.

TV/VCR/DVD Combos

Our Assessment

Wal-Mart's website does not offer much selection when it comes to TV-DVD player combos, and only a few models get much feedback. The reviews are generally short but offer sub-ratings as well as information about how long the reviewer has owned the product and how often it is used. Most TV-DVD combos here are budget offerings. Among current models, the 13-inch Magnavox CD130MW9, a standard definition CRT-based TV-DVD combo, leads the list in terms of rating score and number of reviews.

Top 6 LCD Flat Panel Television-DVD Player Combinations
by Robert Silva
Our Assessment Though not based on testing or hands-on evaluation as far as we can tell, About.com home theater guide Robert Silva posts this list of what he feels to be the best LCD TV-DVD combos. Descriptions are brief, and TV-DVD combos are not rated. Some are discontinued. (Note: ConsumerSearch is owned by About.com, but the two don't share an editorial affiliation.)

TV/VCR/DVD Combos

Our Assessment

PriceGrabber.com is a comparison shopping service that gathers prices from around the Internet. In addition, it offers a place for users to give brief reviews of equipment that they own. Each write-up contains strengths, weaknesses and a summary. Like Amazon.com, there are lots of discontinued models here, and the user ratings are not quite as detailed. Toshiba TVs sit at the top of the rankings, but no current TV-DVD combo gets very many reviews.

Combo TVs

Our Assessment While Sears also gives buyers the opportunity to weigh in on TV-DVD player combos, relatively few have bothered to date. Sears does require reviewers to provide sub-ratings for performance, features and image and audio quality, so that does help identify strengths and weaknesses at a glance.

Our Assessment Epinions.com can be extremely frustrating. It has a listing of TV-DVD combinations, but that only includes standard (CRT) TVs, most of which are discontinued. Other TV-DVD combos are listed on the site, but the easiest way to find them is to search by model number or keyword. Finally, very few TV-DVD combos get more than one or two reviews, and most have none at all.
